HSA vs. PPO?

Okay it's enrollment time....  I know next year is going to be expensive with the baby delivery, dr visits, etc.  Who has used a HSA with delivery?  I think it will save us some money to go that route but I really don't know?  The $30 or $60 copays can get expensive, not including the deductibles that I have to hit for PPO.  Any thoughts?  TIA!

Re: HSA vs. PPO?

  • Ok, I can only provide tangentially related information.

    1. are you sure you have to pay co-pays with your PPO for maternity related stuff? We've changed insurance several times over the last few years and all of our PPOs have covered pre-baby co-pays.

2.I was going to comment on hating HSA, but I just realized we had and HRA (reimbursement). The HRA was the biggest pain of insurance red tape we have ever experienced. Can't comment on your actual question there...

This times a million.  Our company switched to one of these a few years a ago and it's been the worst health insurance plan I've ever had.

**Edit** Ignore me- I don't know what I was thinking, must not of had my morning coffee yet.  I don't have a PPO I have an HMO...

  • PPO - You are correct.  We have to pay 20% of their fee's..... so no copays for the OB but I know there will be a huge fee that will come from the delivery aspect and then all the follow up/well visit dr appts to follow next year.

Yea I don't like the HRA.  That is also an option for us but I was avoiding it Smile

  • HSA = the Flexible spending account right?

We have this (it's a debit card) and use it to cover co-pays as well as my & DD's dental- we go to a dentist that isn't in our dental plan, so we pay upfront, then she submits to our dental and we get a check.  But of course there are things that aren't covered (like I needed a new bite guard because one of the dogs ate my old one!)

You should check and see if you need to pay co-pays for the baby's well-baby visits, because they can definitely add up in the first year when you seem to have to go to the pedi a ton!

No, the FSA is different.  This is like health insurance....  it's a card that you put money on but it's your insurance.  DH's has the HSA and you can use the FSA for some things.  They are different.  I guess I'll have to call his company to see what is required, etc.

  • I know with my PPO I paid $15 for my first ob/gyn visit and that was it. All my hospital bills, U/S, etc. were covered. All my well-baby visits are free as well. Now if we go in for another reason we have to pay a co-pay.

I think it all boils down to what your company (or DH's) covers since most are going to be different in that aspect.

This is true. I know I paid $25 total for my prenatal care and L&D under my own insurance. Now DS is covered under DH's insurance and we have to pay a copay for his well visits. That sucks because we wouldn't if he was covered under my insurance, but the monthly premium would be 10x higher for him on my insurance, so we went with DH's.

  • I agree that you need to double check with your insurance. I paid $50 TOTAL for checkups and deliver. ( I paid at the first appt to confirm my pregnancy and at my viability scan). Also, check regarding well visits, which I think are covered.Remember to also factor in sick visits if your child will be in daycare.

Yea I wish our current insurance was like that...   when I got pregnant, I had to hit my $500 deductible and then I have to hit my coinsurance (20% of everything) deductible.  I didn't know this until after I got pregnant because we normally only pay copays for anything.  It's been fun and this is why I started looking at new insurance for next year, as my deductibles all reset on January 1 and I have to hit them all over again.  I know I'll hit them all in the first month since the baby is due in January.

  • I have a PPO similar to the other state worker nesties.  when PG with Kira I paid no copays once it was confirmed that I was pregnant.  I paid nothing for delivery and only had to pay the cable/phone bill for the hospital.  I think her entire birth/pregnancy cost me $52.

I know that I had a standard vag. birth with drugs.  The drugs are pricey, they were close to $2000.  I think when looking at the EOB from my insurance company the entire birth with drugs experience was close to $13k.  I was very happy to have had insurance.

I believe if you have a c section the fees are a lot higher.

This is something you may want to consider when choosing your health plan.

I don't know anything about the HSA's other than Cliff's old company switched to one and it caused some people to seek new employment.

Ditto this...I paid nothing with my PPO.  I might have paid $15 to $20 for all my blood test?  And then I got a bill for $35 for my hospital stay, and I looked and it was for my TV and Phone use.
