S/O: Who buys expensive candles?

I'm still aghast at the thought of a $75 pumpkin candle.  I think the most I would ever consider paying would be maybe $20 and only if it's handmade, large, and would last forever. But, in general, who buys these expensive candles? What's the most you would pay for a candle?

  • I don't like paying more than $10 for a candle. It has to be big in a jar at that price. IDK candles shouldn't be $$$. They aren't hard to make and the materials are pretty cheap. I have friends that spend tons cash on candles. It just isn't something I can wrap my brain around. LOL

  • I will occasionally pay $25 for the large Yankee Candle jar. Especially the pumpkin spice scent. Yummmm. But, I won't go any higher than that!

  • I make my own. They are 11oz of scented soy wax, which is a decent size, and I never charge more than $15 for them. (Sometimes even $10, it depends on the venue) Some candle prices are RIDICULOUS, for sure.

Edit: This was totally wrong. They RETAIL in a store for $15, but when I am selling in a market or personal venue, it's $8-$10. A good rule of thumb is to charge/pay approx. $1 per ounce of wax, if it's a nice candle.

  • I will spend $20+ on occasion if I find one I really love. I love Aunt Sadie's Housewarming candle. They are small and in a tin and run over $20. I don't buy or burn them often so they are a treat. Otherwise I hit the clearance section at TJ Maxx or target.
  • I'll spend $20 on the White Barn Candle Co. ones or splurge on a Yankee Candle every now and then.  But I love candles and almost always have one burning in my house.
  • I have paid $7 a candle for a good sized, soy candle that has no dye (so it always matches my decor -- yes this is a concern for me!!) made in a teeny tiny town about 30 miles from me. And they smell so good.

I'm considering never buying candles from stores when I can get candles like this so close by. But I didn't make it back to the farmer's market to get one for fall, so I had to buy one from Wal-Mart that smelled like pumpkin and it was still under $10.

I'm especially cheap if it's something I'm just going to light on fire.

  • There is a great candle store in Truckee (near lake tahoe) that I love. You can visit them at tahoe candle . com

They are luminaries and will last a really long time as you put a votive inside. Some of their really large ones are in the triple digits I believe.

I see this as more art though ....

Other than these (or this style) I would not spend that much on candles.

  • I love partylite...they aren't that expensive

I've been to their store.  It's a bit of an overload, smell-wise, but they're wonderful smelling.

To answer the question, I pay about $25 max for a really nice, large candle.  Usually one per season from Yankee, plus another one if I find a local store that I like, like the store in Truckee.  Otherwise, I get votives, tealights, and such at Ikea, and my big pillar candles at walmart/target/kmart.

  • I spend $20-$30 on the large Yankee candles.

All of my solid, unscented candles are cheapies from Wal Mart, Target or Home Goods.

I find you have to spend some money on scented candles though, otherwise the scent doesn't really fill your house the way it should.

  • I shell out $20.00 on a large scented soy candle a couple times per season. They're locally made, sold at the drugstore and most of the money goes to a local charity. I'm all abou that.

Otherwise, I'm lighting up the Glade. Which actually aren't half bad either.

  • I have a Yankee outlet near me ans spend $16 for the big jars.

  • I've never been a candle person; however, I stumbled upon the Henry Bendl (sp?) line a few years back at Bath and Body Works and fell in love with their pomegranate scent. LOVE. I don't remember what they run, but more than $20/candle and I gladly pay it. Alas, they don't carry them any more and I buy them in lots from ebay. I have two in use now, and two stashed away.

Other than that, it's nutso to pay that much for a candle.

  • These candles are my favorite and really the only ones I like at all, I've never really liked candles until I discoverd these.  I don't buy them often and look for them on sale but occassionally spend full-price on them as a gift (about $32).

  • I think the most I have spent is $20 on the full size bath and body works candle. I normally wait until they are half off and buy a few, but if I'm in a pinch I will pay full price.
  • I only buy soy or beeswax, undyed, cotton or wood wick, naturally-scented candles (ideally scented with essential oils). They cost more money than many other candles, but I feel comfortable burning them in my home than I would a Glade, Yankee, or other brand that's artificially colored and scented and made from paraffin or other substances that can be hazardous to our health.

I still don't generally spend more than $20 on a 10 to 14-oz. candle. I buy from a handful of good Etsy sellers, or the brand that's sold at our local co-op and natural pharmacy.

  • I will splurge once a year or so and get a Henri Bendel candle (cinnamon or tuberose).  Usually I make my own, it is really easy to do and fun.  Last time I was in nyc I stopped in Barneys to get some nail polish (that is all about I can afford there).  I walked by the candles section, thought cool candle - picked it up it was $75. I can think of 1,000 other things I would rather spend my money on before I would buy a $75 candle.
  • I love a few of Yankee Candle's scents so I buy about one a season there (the big jars).  I'm heading to a new place around town that sells nice soy candles and lets you mix your own scent though, so we'll see if that's my new addiction.

  • I stock up on soy ones at the local craft shows in the fall but I don't think I've ever spent more than 15 on one. If I run out I like a few of the Target soy ones that are around 10 I think.
  • I will shell out a small fortune($60) on a Diptyque candle twice a year, but my tea lights and tapered candles come from Target and Ikea.

  • The most expensive candle I ever purchased was the unity candle for my wedding.  I believe it was $35.  Other than that I stick to the cheapo candles.

  • I spend between $20 - 25 on Beanpod soy candles.  They burn clean compared to Yankee candles.  It is well worth the price!  I ended up repainting my bathroom from the soot of the candles.  Even after I cut the wicks short.
  • I don't like a lot of scents so most of our candles are just unscented columns, votives, etc. to go in our candleholders.  We do have a couple of jar candles that have more "clean" scents, I think none of them have been over $5.  I get really easily overwhelmed by things like Yankee Candles.

I have seriously considered buying this one for $28 though.  I love the smell, it's not too strong, and at 70 hours burn time it would last us forever.

  • i LOVE gold canyon brand. They have two wicks so they burn the whole candle and we have a giant great room - which one candle's scent can fill. I feel like mine last forever too! good luck!

Wow. I have never had that problem. Even after burning Yankee Candles for years.

  • I've spent up to $25 on candles at Anthropologie.  I just love the Illume coconut mango scent and I'm a sucker for nice packaging.  I'm considering buying these other candles (lovely scent) that come in these beautiful earthenware bowls.  Sure they're not cheap at $25, but I get to keep the bowl after that right?  So far, I've bought maybe four expensive candles in the past 8 years, and in many cases I've reused the containers for things like pencil cups and the like.
  • I don't even buy candles. I get enough of them as teacher gifts. But if I did buy them I wouldn't spend more than $20-$30 on a Yankee Candles scent I love.

  • I buy CandleWix candles from https://CandleWix.com They have amazingly strong candles with awesomely slow burn times. I tend to get 60-80 hours of burn time from their 12oz candle. And the scent throw is the best I have found anywhere. I can burn their Angel or Teakwood Mahogany candles for just 1hr and the entire lower floor of my 3100 sqft house smells amazing. I have never had a better candle to date. They also have several fruity scents that are equally as strong. They sell for $14 or less. I can't wait to get through all of their fragrance options!
