sippy cups

So, our pedi just told us we need to work on using a cup. I swear I need a mom manual some days. Anyways I had a sippy in the closet and we are trying that but how do you know whether your baby likes it or doesn't? We are only on day 2 of this and as of right now she grabs it and puts it to her mouth but doesn't tilt it up enough to drink it, we have to help her. Plus, she is teething so half the time she just bites it. Any advice is great.

Re: sippy cups

  • I remember buying some cheapy disposable ones from target that had a straw instead of a spout. R liked those. And fwiw, both of my kids bite (or bit)the tops of their zippy cups.
  • You might try a straw cup too. We gave DS a straw cup at around 8 months, and he took to it super fast. We ditched all bottles by the time he was 8 1/2 months, because he did so well with the straw.

We started a regular sippy around 6 months or so, and he wasn't a big fan at first, it took a couple days for him to get the hang of it. We just put water in it and pretty much left it our for him all day.

  • We also used the straw cups.  It seemed like that was easier for them to figure out instead of learning how to tip it up.

Once they were a little older we did go to regular sippy cups.  I LOVE the Tommy Tippee cups that are sold at BRU.  They never leak and are easy to clean.

  • This is the one that we have for Mason.  He has had it for about a month now and is just figuring out that he can get water out of it.

The Nuk Learner is what Colin used. We tried several and had the best luck with that one.

  • I started my boys on the soft top ones around 4 mos when they ate their solids just to get practicing. We introduced the hard top ones and straw cups when they were 6 mos old. I started earlier than I know a lot of people do, but I think they learn it better with lots of practice. GL

  • Any soft top sippys always worked for my kids.  Once they got the hang of it, I moved to hard top ones because they quickly learn how to squish the top and let the liquids spill out everywhere.
  • We started Austin on the super soft top ones, like the ones that are the consistency of a bottle top, but he would just chew on it. So then we switched to these:

The top isn't hard, but isn't soft either. And I think since it had handles he kind of got the concept of tipping quicker.

They will start to leak over time though. We still have and use the original 4 that I bought, but now if he lays them on their side, it will leak out the top all over the place.

  • We have always used the Munchkin soft top and straw ones for both my girls.  Its a slow process when they are learning to use um.  We quit bottles cold turkey so the girls were obligated to use the sippy cups.  Good luck!

  • Thanks for the tips. I feel so behind, Lyra is just starting the sippy and will be 9 months on Friday. Oye! Since she is bf and rarely gets a bottle I wasn't to concerned about giving them up at age one.

The one we have is munchkin brand. I'm gonna give her a week or so on this and also go check out the selection at target and bru again. Tonight she was just biting it so milk was going everywhere.

  • We have Born Free cups that we use. To get A used to them we started with feeding him tipped back, similar to a bottle position, which lasted about 2 weeks until he started to get the tipping idea. We tried straw cups as well, but A loves drinking from a "real" straw, so the no-spill straw baby cups just tick him off since it takes too long to get to the milk or water v. a regular straw.

  • We used the Nuk trainer as well.  Since it was more of a glorified bottle we took away the bottle at 10 months and did formula in the Nuk.

We did straw cups for water.  I think they were Nuby brand.....two handles, spillproof straw.  He still uses one for water in his crib since it never leaks.
