Office politics

I'm having a nightmare start to the school year.  We have a lot of newer administrators, all of which are very young and had little time in a classroom before jumping into their new roles.  With that there are just always the people that you mind your p's and q's with.

My question is, do you:

1. Believe that you should keep your friends close and your enemies closer?

2. If so, do you ever struggle with it?

If I were more tech savy I probably would have just made a clicky but oh well!  Thanks guys!

I'm also confused about what exactly you're asking. FWIW, I do everything in my power to keep from getting sucked into the school gossip mill. I focus on my lessons and my students, and don't participate in gossip about colleagues. My administrators know this (and most administrators have very little classroom experience--few successful and longstanding classroom teachers make the switch to administration) and respect me for it. Just do your job and let the nitwits worry about their drama.

  • Rule of thumb for workplace politics: Be polite and professional to all, and stay out of office drama. Without knowing more details, this is likely one of those times where you need to close the door and teach.

This.  I know it's easy for teachers to get wrapped up in drama along with their students and the office politics.  The more you ignore this the better off you are.

  • Ty guys!  I'm not sure if it's drama or just junk!  We have all new administrators and many of them are looking to make a name for themselves on our backs... I have been minding my business and just doing my job and leaving it there at the end of the day but a coworker told me I wasn't being "political" when it came to my boss.  I don't ever see him, but I'm polite when I do... wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong I guess!  Lol!  Thank you though for everyone's advice!   =)
