I'M NOT YELLING AT ANYONE I PROMISE, MY LAPTOP DECIDED THAT THIS IS HOW I NEED TO TYPE TODAY, IT'S VERY ANNOYING.
ANYWAYS, WE'VE TAKEN LO TO PHOTOGRAPHERS 3 TIMES IN ONE MONTH WITH NO LUCK. HE IS IN A VERY CLINGY "DON'T YOU DARE PUT ME DOWN" PHASE. IT'S VERY FRUSTRATING, THE MINUTE WE SET HIM DOWN HE CRIES, THE MINUTE WE PICK HIM UP HE IS FINE. HE WAS WELL RESTED, RECENTLY FED AND ALL THE PHOTOGRAPHERS WERE VERY PATIENT AND TRIED THEIR BEST.
WE HAVE A NICE CAMERA AND FINALLY DECIDED TO TAKE OUR OWN. MY QUESTION IS, DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY GOOD TIPS FOR ME? WE REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT WE ARE DOING, SO JUST ABOUT ANYTHING WOULD BE HELPFUL. TIA.
Re: Anyone here know how to take pictures?
I have no advice about taking your own photos, but I wanted to suggest something.
Instead of doing a portrait studio setting, could you try one of the natural light photographers that meet you somewhere of your choosing (the park, OU campus, etc) and photograph you doing things you normally do...like playing with your LO, giving him a kiss/hug, etc. You're able to get more action in the shots because some of them are taken without you knowing.
We went to OU's campus once and B was awesome for it--he was 2 and kind of a pill. BRC photography did those photos. If you're already playing out somewhere and having a good time and your LO is relaxed, maybe they won't notice being photographed as much. If you've already tried this, I'm sorry!
I know Tavia and JLimberg do on site photography, and they're both awesome as well!!
I guess I should have mentioned this in my OP. We are on a very strict budget. We are from Enid, so we drove down to OKC on Monday to go to Portrait Innovations, we've also tried the Sears portrait studio here. It doesn't fit in our budget to drive to OKC again, and most on location photographers (that I've found anyway) are way out of our price range.
Also, I'm just now starting to lose the baby weight I gained and I'm very self conscious of my body, so I don't really want to be in the pictures. I just want them to be of LO.
Why don't you go out somewhere pretty in Enid then, and you and DH can take turns playing with LO/taking photos? Then you can make sure to keep yourself out of the shot or crop yourself out of it if you want.
Personally, I wouldn't care about the baby weight. Yes, I wouldn't want any super unflattering photos of myself with 3 chins or something, but even if I was a little heavier than I used to be, I would want photos of myself with my baby as he grows. Just my two cents.

Without knowing what kind of camera you have, most have P (program mode) which is like Auto on steroids, I suggest shooting in that.
Lighting is the biggest issue (and is what makes most mom-tographers look like amateurs.) I suggest doing the session either in the early morning or late evening, when the sun is low in the sky, and try to shoot with the sun off to the side behind your son- in an open field setting. Or, shoot in a downtown area, like have him stand in a cool doorway or by a brick wall, in the shade. Try to shoot down on his level for a better perspective.
Hope that helps. Feel free to PM me if you have more technical questions.
Great advice!
I have nothing to add other than perhaps try to use the rule of thirds when you can. Imagine the blue box is your view finder, put the subject in one of the circled intersections.
Easier said than done when you're talking about chasing a toddler!
