Out of State Job Question...

I might delete this later.

DH and I live in Illinois where the cost of living is really high (property taxes, income taxes, sales taxes, etc.).  We both agree that it would be financially beneficial to move out of Illinois to IN, KY or TN where our money could be stretched further.  He's really excited about the possibility, and I agree it would be beneficial.  DH would be able to work at his same job remotely, but I do not have that flexibility.  I would have to find a job in my field before we moved.  (I would not feel comfortable moving without having a job lined up.)

The problem is that the whole concept of moving out of state really makes me nervous.  I think it's a combination of things.  I would be further away from my family, away from my friends, and really have no guarantee that the job I would take would be a good job.  Because of my specialized field, there are only certain places I can work (unless I want to fall back on working an hourly job somewhere).  If I don't like my job, we would probably have to move again if I found a new one.   I'm worried that we'll move, and we won't be happy (or I won't be happy).  We're not really happy where we are now, but I don't want to make it worse, ya know?  These nerves are really hampering my job search.

Has anyone every been through anything like this?  Has anyone taken a job in another state?  Any advice?

Re: Out of State Job Question...

  • I live and work in different states. It seems you are doing this for money reasons. You better look into that. One, I pay double taxes to the state I work in, the state I live in (not taken out of my check but I receive a bill for) and then federal taxes.

Then you have to consider medical benefits - what is the coverage like? Will there be doctors that take this plan? Or not? Will you be paying more money for a plan that extends are far as you plan to move? Not just that but hospitals too.

  • I've moved states several times, both for my work and DH's work.

There are no guarantees. It either works out or it doesn't. That's one of life's great adventures.

We just relocated 5 hours from our former home. Even farther away from family, but I don't care. DH doesn't love his job, but his opportunities for growth are amazing here, and he already has a line on a potential promotion. Every day we're more glad we moved here.

I wasn't fond of where we lived last, but it was a stable job for DH for 6 years and we made the best of it.

Haha.. that's my issue.  I don't deal with uncertainty well. :)   I'm a major planner, and like things to be black and white.  I think part of this process will need to be taking a "chill pill" or two...

Yeah, my life (esp this year) would drive you nuts. DH took a job in a new state, and we had to juggle a toddler, finding a place to live, selling our house, dealing with details of the relocation package, etc. It was a rough 5 months. But it's paying off.

As a Navy brat, we moved every 3-5 years, with little say from my dad on where we were going.
