poll: baby first trip to the store?

when was your baby's first trip to the store.. ect?

i've taking him for a walk around my complex but im overprotective and worried to take him out to the store on a quick errand. i know its ftm jitters but i also watch him in his crib every night and make sure he is breathing. we also have been to the pedi 2 times so far because of congestion (which he told his perfectly normal in newborns and to use the vaporizer, aspirator, and saline drops)..

Hello. I've waited here for you. Everlong<3<br>

Re: poll: baby first trip to the store?

  • Jack's first trip to mall was 1 week.  I didn't allow strangers to touch him.

Charlotte was at Target the day we were released from hospital because we needed food after Hurricane Irene,  she was at the mall before 1 week.  I had a GTG that week also with friends and kids over.

I truly believe that getting out and going is best for recovery and to get them adjusted to the world.  Both kids are excellent in the car from being in the car at such a young age frequently.  Then others I know who were never in the car and then were nightmares when put in.

We also were in a library group by 7 weeks.

  • Teaghan was 2 weeks exactly. I had a pedi appointment and afterwards we went to the diner for breakfast. After that we took her everywhere with us. She's great in the car and she's great when we are out so I don't mind being out and about with her.

  • My situation with A was different because she had reflux and was constantly crying, so bringing a screaming crying baby to public places wasn't my idea of fun. So, I don't think I brought her out of the house until she was almost 2 months old. At that point she was doing better, we had her on prevacid and rice cereal and she wasn't crying as much. I know it was just before her 1st series of vaccinations and she has them at 2 months.

I was soooo jealous of all my friends who could bring thier babies anywhere and not have issues so If A didn't have reflux I'm sure I would have been out and about MUCH earlier.

  • I think C was 6 weeks. It was too cold to take her out. And we did the same doctor run too because of the congestion.
  • Drew was 2 weeks and we took a quick trip to Target but I kept him completely covered. Summer babies are different, but the colder weather babies, you have to be careful of germs, the flu, etc. They have NO vaccines and are way more susceptible to illness then older babies.

Id rather be cautious then end up in the hospital with a very sick newborn. Not worth it to me. Its been gorgeous out, get him some fresh air. Rockland Lake, Woodbury commons, Sugar Loaf, Nyack, Piermont. We're always out on walks, let me know if you want meet up.

  • LB had to go out at exactly 1 week for an eye doctor appt.  On the way home we stopped at BRU because she was smaller than we were told and did not have enough warm newborn clothes.

  • Harrison was out early because we had to keep making trips to Good Sam.  3 days in a row between the doctor and the hospital for blood tests.  After that, we went on walks and went camping.  But he was born in May so it was different.  I didn't go too many places until about 3-4 weeks because of my c-section.

  • Our first trip out was to BJs when I think Kevin was 2 or 3 weeks old. We went at night hoping nobody would be around and had him completely covered. After that the reflux/colic started and I hardly went anywhere until he was 8 weeks old b/c I didn't want to risk a crying episode.

  • Well, A didn't leave the hospital for 2 weeks. When she did we really didn't take her out of the house until her actual due date which was another 3 weeks. So we took her out around 5 weeks or so but still limited it a ton since her lungs weren't completely developed at birth and she was more apt to catch things! We did take her out to the peditrician when needed though.

  • Aside from her appointments to the doctor, she really didn't go out until almost 6 weeks. I really didn't want her out in stores unnecessarily when she wasn't vaccinated, covered or not. It was also an early flu year.  I just didn't think it was worth the risk of bringing her to the grocery store, shopping, whatever when I could just wait for her dad to come home and run myself.  Maybe this time will be different with a spring baby, but I don't know....
  • K didn't go anywhere besides her pedi appts until 2 months. I thought it was too risky during the winter for her getting sick. I ran errands and shopped while she stayed home with DH. We did go on walks almost everyday though, even in the cold, and I took her to other people's houses, just not malls, stores, restaurants, etc. I tend to agree with the others who said they didn't think it was worth it.

  • Since all my family was here for his birth (they all live in Peru) we wanted to take advantage of that and we had his baptism exactly at two weeks. After the ceremony we went to a restaurant to celebrate. My dad is a doctor and he said it was fine. After that we started going to the mall once a week.
  • I would say the first time we took her to the store she was about 2-3 weeks old. Only because I was sore from my c-section. But now I take her out with me but always bring my stroller so that I can keep her covered if need be. Dont worry, I constantly am nervous about germs and always have hand sanitizer on hand hehe!
  • After George's 1 week pedi appt, we made a very quick stop into Target (around the corner from the office). It was nearly empty at the time and he stayed in his infant seat the few minutes we were there.

At 3 weeks, we took him (DH, my sister and I) to the Westchester Mall for a few hours.  I was getting stir crazy and really needed to walk.  We chose that mall knowing it is completely dead during the weekdays and there are nursing lounges at Nordstom. No one dared touch him but, if they had tried he had an entourage that was ready to slap hands  :-)

  • I would say probably about one week.  And it wasn't the store, it was a party at my friends house with alot of people...but it was outside, it was the summer and everyone was good about looking but not touching.

  • Take that little cutie out! Just don't let others touch him or breathe on him. This may offend some people, but SO WHAT! You're the mom.
