Ok so I taught myself to crochet but I can not for the life of me figure out how to read a pattern - does anyone know a good site or tutorial on how to read a pattern? Anything I make I just kinda wing it but I would like to be able to follow something. TIA
Re: Crochet tips
Most patterns will have a list of abreviations for special stitches. The most common are:
sc: single crochet
hdc: half double crochet
dc: double crochet
ch: chain stitch
Otherwise, you can always youtube whatever the abbreviation is, and it will usually give you a tutorial.
Start with something labeled "easy" and go from there. Are you on ravelry or lionbrand? Something like this hat would be a good start
Learning to read a pattern is the hardest part of learning, I think. Once you know the abbreviations though, it's pretty straightforward to figure out. Psalm listed some of the basics above.
I recommend starting off with professional patterns rather than ones written by random bloggers or the like. I like the ones on LionBrand's site. They're well-written and every one comes with a glossary included. The patterns are rated by difficulty and also reviewed by users. It's a good place to start.
