POLL: Can you work from home?

DH and I were talking about what the average employee can do as far as telecommuting.

I freelance from home currently.

When I was working at the same company full time, I was able to work from home if the weather was bad or if they shut down the site (because of weather). I had a long commute, and in those cases my boss would recognize that I could be more productive at home than sitting in a car for hours.

He will occasionally WFH if his wife has a dr appt or he's back from a challenging weekend of off-site work.

We also have people in our company who are 100% telecommuters.

I am able to work from home sometimes. I work in event planning (at a university) so if I'm not meeting with vendors or departments, or setting up/working an event, I can do s lot of the planning stuff from home.

We are only permitted to work from home in the case of an emergency such as something came in at 5pm and they don't want to stay late so you take it home. Technically we could, but they do not permit it.

I could work from home if they'd let me!  I think I'd love it.

My dad works from home and really enjoys it.  He's a medical director for a health insurance company.

I have the ability to work from home, but they generally discourage it unless you have a reason. It doesn't necessarily have to be an emergency, but it has to be a good reason, not just, I didn't feel like getting dressed.

I guess that there is some stuff that I am able to do from home.  But since a lot of my job requires networking/collaborating with community partners, I couldn't just sit at home in my pajamas and effectively do my job. 

That doesn't mean that I'm in the office all day M-F, but I need to be "at work". 

In certain circumstances, it would be permitted to do computer work from home.......but it's not something that would be allowable on a regular basis and certainly not "just because" or because I was too cheap to pay for daycare.

We work from home, but not on a set schedule. Today I had a call at 8, which means I'd have to take a 640 train into work if I wanted to make it on time, so I stayed home. Other days, I feel like sleeping in, so I stay home. I try not to work from home more than once a week unless there's a legit reason (e.g., traveling) - I don't want to ruin it for anyone else.

At my old job, after X years of service, you could work from home set days. You couldn't change days without significant effort. 

Another job allowed you to work from home if there was a real reason, but they'd monitor what you were doing. Like - management would sit and watch your computer's activity all day. (They were kooky for all sorts of reasons and I left ASAP.)

I can -- I have a laptop, VPN connection, company BB and a job that would allow me to work from anywhere (Project Manager). Unfortunately my supervisors frown upon telecommuting but I still do it a few times a month, usually when I have a DR appt, bad weather or traveled the day before/after.

I worked from home 4 days a week in my last job and I totally miss it.

sometimes I wish. sometimes going to the hospital sucks. however, I don't want my patients in my home, haha.

The official rule for my position in terms of WFH is 2 days/month.  That being said there is a woman on my team who WFH 1 day/week becuase she has a nanny who takes a class on Wednesday evenings and she can't get home in time for the nanny to get to her class.  I believe if I had a good reason, I could WFH more often.  Whenever I've asked to WFH, I've never been told no.  That being said, I can't be missing meetings becuase I am WFH.

I'm a teacher so, while I can't do the primary portion of my job from home, I can certainly take home grading and lesson planning. I tend to choose to finish as much as I can at work, though. I would rather leave work at work.
