Moving--need northern Boston area recs!

Hi ladies! I'm just starting to think about this (H thinks I'm nuts) but there is a good possibility of us relocating from the DC area to Boston-ish early next year. I'm from CT but am clueless when it comes to great areas, and most importantly, traffic! H would actually get working in Portsmouth, NH but gone most of the time. My job field would bring me closer to Boston (Lexington, Woburn, etc).

We're both willing to commute somewhat, but I currently have an hour commute and really want it closer to 30min when we move. Is there an almost-halfway point I should start looking in? Is commuting 95 --> 93 a complete nightmare?  Thanks!

  • Alex!!

I live in Chelmsford, Ma which is about 30 mins from Boston - I work in lexington, which is about a 15-20 minute commute on backroads...no Highway! I love it!

some great areas to look at:

    Chelmsford

    Concord

    Carlisle

    Bedford

    Westford

    Lexington

    HTH!!

  • Haha hi Sharkie! I should have XP'd this on Sept 2011 huh!? :) That does help, it's tough to google without having a clue...

  • Are you guys looking to buy, or rent?

  • The worst morning traffic tends to be 95 south from Wakefield to Waltham and 93 south from Wilmington to Boston.  Reverse that in the evenings.  Route 3 south will have some traffic too.  Your H will have a reverse commute to Portsmouth so traffic won't be an issue, but it is a good distance away from Woburn (probably an hour drive).  If I were you I'd probably start looking between 95 and 495, around and east of route 3.

Not sure, rent at first....buying freaks me out.

Thanks! Yeah, H figures he'll be in the car an hour without traffic, but is sort of giving me a reprieve from my current horrible commute. And he'll only have to do it half the year so it should be ok.

  • Sharkdiver's suggestions are great. A couple other towns to consider:

    Wilmington

    Tewksbury

    Andover or North Andover

Burlington (Burlington Mall - woot woot!)

95 and 93 are typically a joke during morning rush hour. I prefer public transportation because I can't stand holding my foot on the brake for over an hour going into Boston. Your H should be fine with his reverse commute. My sister actually works in Portsmouth. If you end up at a job near public transportation I recommend it. Boston has lots of options for public transportation. Best of luck!

  • I live in Chelmsford as well, but would NOT recommend it if you're looking to commute toward the city on 3/93/95.  If you're working not too far then it won't be bad (DH commuted to Woburn for a few months - he took 495 to 93 and his exit was right when 93 started getting bad.

In order for your commute to be less than 30 minutes, in the area you're lookign at (the 95 corridor), you really need to be looking in or directly around the town you'd be in.  I work in Billerica and there are mornings where it takes me almost 30 minutes and I only live 8 miles from my office!

  • It depends--what type of area are you looking for? Do you want to be closer to the nightlife, restaurants, shops, museums in Boston or do you want to be in a suburban community. I'm in Cambridge and it's a close drive to Lexington, but I can hop on the subway to get to Boston.

Also, what's your budget and what type of apartment are you looking for? That might determine where you look as well.

    Good luck!
