60th Birthday ideas

New here with a question!

My mother's 60th birthday is coming up in December, and because we live 18 hours away we won't be able to be there on her birthday. I had thrown my mother-in-law a surprise party for her 60th a few years ago, and wanted to do something special for my mom as well. I was thinking of just arranging a dinner for her and my father, but was hoping to be more creative!

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Re: 60th Birthday ideas

  • For my parents anniversary a few years ago, we arranged for a Saturday night stay and a fancy Sunday brunch at a Ritz 2 hours away from their home.  Could something like that be possible?

Can you be there for a late 60th bday party?  In other words a celebration that's a few weeks after her actual bday?

  • You could hire a barbershop quartet to stop by and sing to her.  Always fun, especially if you send them to serenade her while she's at work or something.  :)

Or have a surprise day planned for her.  She opens one envelope after she completes each activity.  Each envelope tells her what to do next.  Example - Envelope 1 - 11:00 appt to get her nail done with a gift card to pay for it. Envelope 2 - a reservation to a restaurant at 12:45, with a gift card to cover lunch - and you arrange to have a friend of hers (or your dad) there to meet her as a surprise!  Envelope 3 - tickets to a play or hockey game that evening.  Envelope 4 - a birthday card telling her you hope she had a great day!

  • For my mom's 60th, I got her 60 gifts, and she got to open one each minute so she had an entire hour full of gifts on her birthday. Some of the gifts were small and inexpensive, like her favorite candy bar, a candle in her favorite scent, some of her favorite tea bags, flower seeds to plant in her garden, etc. A few of her gifts were prints of photos from years ago, along with a note explaining why that memory of her was important to me. She loved it. You could send something like that in the mail as long as the gifts are small.

For my MIL's 60th birthday, we paid for a photographer to take a family photo, which hadn't been done in almost 20 years. We didn't do the photo session on her birthday, we just gave her an empty frame with a note saying that as soon as we could arrange to get everyone together, we would get a photo taken. The photo actually got taken 2 months later when the family members from out of state were able to visit. Her gift turned out not only to be the photo, but the chance for MIL to have her whole family together, which happens rarely with everyone spread out over several states.

  • You could have something special delivered to her while she's at work, like flowers or cookie gift baskets. That way you can show her you're thinking of her even though you can't be there with her to celebrate.
