Halloween Party?

Hey girls,

Just a question, I was thinking about having a small Halloween Party this year (like 10 people tops--2 of those being my husband and I), but I'm not really sure what to DO for the party, I've never actually hosted a party before...is a Halloween Party just an excuse for people to get together and get drunk? Because I'm not a huge drinker (I don't have anything against it but the few times I have gotten trashed have not been good experiences), and my husband is taking a break from it for awhile (4locos should not be on the market).  We are both 22 years old and most of our friends are the same age.

Anyways, I've been looking on pinterest and have seen tons of cute decoration ideas and tons of great recipes, which has had me excited to do the party, but if you guys think people are just going to want to get drunk, I don't know if I'm going to go forward with it.  I just need to decide soon, its coming up pretty quickly! Anyone have any party games/ideas to share?

Re: Halloween Party?

  • For that small of a group, you could host is as a "Devilish Dinner Party" or something. Decorate the house, find some creepy food and drink suggestions (Pinterest is great for that) and just have people over for a themed dinner.

Since it's Halloween, if you wanted people to come in costumes, you could always find a Murder Mystery game (buy online or in stores) and make it part of the event. Or just play regular board games.

I was thinking the same thing.

If you think it's too much to ask for costumes, maybe you can buy some inexpensive devil horns and tales or cute witch hats at a party store for some "accessories" for guests but not full on costumes.  Perhaps you can ask everyone to come dressed in red and/or black?

Maybe you can have some interactive foods like fondue or a chocolate fountain to get people chatting.  Maybe carve/decorate a pumpkin or two.

    GL!  Sounds like fun.

  • You can definitely have a Halloween Party without drinking.  My friends have a wildly popular party every other year and they don't have booze due to their religious beliefs. The trick is that they have an amazing haunted house in their barn.  So, I would say that awesome decorations can make a Halloween party really fun.

I threw a Halloween Shower for a friend (it was co-ed) and we had a pumpkin carving contest set up in the garage.  We had all the pumpkins pre-gutted so people could get right down to carving/decorating.  I randomly picked the teams for more competition and so all the couples wouldn't just team up.  So fun! People went crazy, suprisingly using props from my garage (a hatchet stuck in the side of the pumpkin with seeds pooled around the "wound" for effect!)

There's always a costume contest, bobbing for apples, carmel apple decorating (toppings like nuts and jimmies and chocolate chips).

If you want to serve alcohol, but don't want people to get drunk, maybe have some craft beers, like Octoberfest varieties, instead of mixed drinks.  Those are harder to drink quickly, and people will be more likely to get full before they get drunk.  And have lots of food available.

  • Saw this and it made me think of you.  http://www.hostessblog.com/2011/10/spectacular-deathy-hallows-dinner-party/

Thank you for responding! I like the idea of a dinner party, that way its like hinting to people that this is a mature event, but we can still have fun with the halloween themed food and the costumes.  I kind of like the murder mystery game idea, do you have a good suggestion for a game I can buy?

GatorWedsNole, I like your idea of carving/decorating pumpkins...I just checked my email and saw the nest newsletter and it included pumpkin carving templates, so thats actually a perfect idea!!

Thank you for your advice...I'm not completely against drinking but a couple of my hubby's friends can go overboard sometimes and I don't want it to be a drunk fest lol.  I like your idea of having beers instead of mixed drinks to make it harder for people to get drunk quickly!

And good ideas for bobbing for apples (who didn't love that as a child?!) and a costume contest!!

  • If you're interested in the murder mystery games, there are a few different brands. I've done the "How to Host a Murder" ones and the "Murder Mystery Party" ones. The only catch to these is you're supposed to come in costumes that match your character. I can't find a Halloween themed one, but I have done this one and it was a blast: http://www.ugames.com/ugitem.asp?itemno=33205&brand=UG

The only catch is that the games are usually for 6-8 players, and you have to have each guest confirmed. You could "double cast" (have two people share one part), or you could act as MC rather than play a character. It's fun no matter what.

  • We usually have a big blowout Halloween party with lots of people, but we also do a get together earlier in the week for some of our close buddies (usually around 10 people).  I make chili and hot dogs, and we do beer/mixed drinks, and everyone brings a pumpkin to carve.  There's usually a baseball game on, so we just hang out and carve pumpkins and watch the game.  So that might be an easy option and make it more interactive.

Something more 'partyish' would be having a fun dinner party.  Instead of having everyone wear full out costumes, I liked pp's ideas of offering disguises at the door (fake moustaches/beards, goofy glasses, different hats/wigs, feather boas, maybe some items like a stethoscope, gold chain yadda yadda) and have a pile of "Hi, My Name is" cards and have each person make up their own funny name for the night.  I'd also set up a little table set up with different jars of Halloween treats like candy fangs, etc, with little baggies, so everyone can 'Trick or Treat' on their way out the door.

  • My husband and I have a Halloween party every year.  It's a great opportunity to get creative and feel like a kid again.  We usually do old-school games like pin the tail on the donkey, bobbing for apples, etc... bonfire with s'mores.  I even give goody bags filled with homemade treats - pumpkin bread, chocolate covered pretzels.  Our friends get a kick out of it.  There's always alcohol too, but no need for it to be a party where everyone shows up just to 'get drunk.'
  • I actually can't do the Halloween Party after all Crying

I work for a radio station and we are doing a really big Halloween Party Saturday Night that doesn't get over until 2 am on Sunday and thats when I was thinking of doing the party, but I already know i'm going to be too exhausted to get food ready and do another late night, plus I work again on Monday (when Halloween actually is) and don't party on weeknights...so its just not going to work this year.

I'm thinking about just decorating the house this week to get in the mood and maybe make my hubby a few festive things Party!!! like Halloween Pizza and some kind of cute dessert...theres always next year I guess Sad
