Vague terrorist threats

Do any of you receive the emails from the US embassy every time there is a 'terrorist threat'? They get on my nerves. Honestly, I don't understand the point in sending out vague warnings that there might be terrorists possibly thinking about maybe targeting Americans in London, Paris, Berlin, Moscow or Tokyo. That we should be on guard and avoid unnecessary public transportation because they have been known to attack public transportation. No dates. No actual city, just a list of almost all the major international hubs. At least the one sent out today mentioned that diplomats are possibly targeted. Usually it just says to be on guard. I don't get the point of sending out warnings if there is nothing we can do to avoid it short of staying in a hobbit hole for the rest of our existence.

  • Oh my...nope, never rec'd one of those.  Crazy!

I won't sit in a hole, but I have nightmares regularly about more plane attacks, especially when DH is flying.  Its a re-occuring dream that I'm at an airport and every plane in the air just starts falling from the sky.  As the years go by, the dreams become more real and vivid.  I had one a few nights ago and DH had to wake me up because I was screaming.  In my dream I was stuck on a commuter train that a plane hit and I was suffocating.

  • Yes! Ugh, we receive them from the one in Saudi and they ALWAYS say "Emergency Message" in the subject line, which of course isn't fun to read. The other day it was talking about how 2 years ago on National Day there were people who went a bit crazy on the main road...but nothing else about anything planned? How is that an emergency? Today's was a chemical spill and how the fumes would be gone in 12 hours...how does that constitute an emergency? I think they need to work on their subject lines, lol

eek. that sounds horrible!  :( I would be asking my doc for anxiety meds if I were having nightmares regularly like that. I can't deal with regular nightmares, the leaving me feeling anxious all day after.

  • No.  I'm glad I don't, too!  Why do you get them?  I really just want to go on with life as usual and not be scared about terrorist attacks, but I still am scared to fly.  The fear isn't going to stop me from doing it, though.

  • I never bothered registering with the embassy so I don't get the emails.  Maybe I should do that.

Me neither. My company sends us warnings, but they are usually either super vague or way blown out of proportion. Not really useful.

  • We got this big long brief when we got here about why it is a good thing to register with your local embassy. (The company my H is with is mostly Brits and Aussies) and they told all kinds of horror stories about how in certain situations if you aren't registered the embassy won't be accounting for you, and know to look for you in an earthquake or civil uprising blah blah.  So we went to the Embassy to register and were basically told that yes, they account for you, but that is about it and we should plan (or H's company should plan) to take care of anything should something bad actually happen.  Apart from the annoying emails that seem mostly like a CYA on their part it doesn't seem to do much good.

We do get invited to some of their parties as a result though.

  • I'm registered here in SA and the alerts are usually pretty appropriate, albeit a bit paranoid. I get one every few months or so warning about a specific event. Like when there were violent protests going on Swaziland, they told us to stay away. Nothing to do with being an American citizen, just potentially dangerous I suppose.

A couple of the alerts have been really vague and useless though, like you said.

  • We got one today from the Tokyo embassy.

"An Iranian-born U.S. citizen, working on behalf of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Qods Force - designated by the Treasury Department in 2007 for its support of terrorism - is suspected of conspiring to assassinate the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to the United States.  The U.S. government assesses that this Iranian-backed plan to assassinate the Saudi Ambassador may indicate a more aggressive focus by the Iranian Government on terrorist activity against diplomats from certain countries, to include possible attacks in the United States."
