House question

I don't watch House, but I'm really wondering about something. So, from the commercials, it looks like he's in prison? And, wasn't he in a mental institution the season before? Every time I see the commercials, all I can think, is how on earth is he going to be allowed to practice medicine, in any capacity, after both of those offenses.

Re: House question

  • He was in prison and he was in a mental institution I think 2 or 3 seasons ago. I think there were certain things he had to do to be allowed back after the mental thing (though part of that may have been for his prescription drug use too though) and right now he's back b/c Foreman needed him.

But the show wouldn't be what it is if he wasn't allowed to practice - but it is most definitely not reality.

  • He is a hot mess.

Keep in mind it is a tv show. If he wasn't allowed to practice medicine, the show wouldn't really exist.  Basically, they need him because he's a super genius so they find ways to jump through hoops to get him back in the hospital to solve all the cases no one else can solve.

Ok, thanks. This is pretty much what I was thinking was probably going on. It was just kind of funny because DH and I always see the commercials for the show, and whatever season it was that he was in the mental ward, we joked about how there wouldn't really be much of a show if he wasn't a Dr. anymore. I remember telling DH "well, at least he's not in prison". Just funny that we joked about it and now they're going there.

Yeah, it's definitely not realistic, although certainly people can regain their medical license after some pretty serious stuff.  I think the main thing, though, is he is a "diagnostician" and is notorious for not wanting to actually interact with patients.  Even before all this he would never talk to a patient, just send his underlings to ask questions and report back.  Right now I think with the gig from prison they are calling him a "consultant" and paying him minimum wage.  He just gathers the info and proposes diagnoses, but never sets hands on a patient.  He has his minions for that, and the cases are theoretically under the supervision of some other guy.  It's a technicality that wouldn't fly in the real world, but for the purposes of the show it works.
