I tried scrolling back a few pages but I didn't see any topics about this lately, especially for the new iPhone 4s.
ETA- just noticed that I overlooked the one threat below... but if anyone has any comments on the below series (since they don't appear to be mentioned) or any other cases, I'd greatly appreciate it.
I've heard that Otterbox cases are really good but very bulky. I was looking at their website and their Impact Series/Commuter Series don't look like they're that big but I can't tell if it is just the picture. Does anyone have theses or have any recommendations? Ideally, I'd like the slimmest case possible that will protect my phone (especially the screen) if it drops.
Re: iPhone Cases- Otterbox
The Apple employee told me that it doesn't really matter what kind of case you get as long as you have one that puts some height above the screen. Ex. when your phone is laying face down the screen is lifted up and not flush with the surface.
My husband's otter box (it was the Defender) fell about 2 feet and the top front of the otter box pushed into his screen and it shattered. IMO, it's really hit or miss on what type of drop you're going to have. I just don't want you to think that it's going to be awesome for even the most random drop (like his was).
I tried the Defender for a couple of months but I didn't like it in the end. The case pulled on my hair, you can't slide it into and out of your pockets (especially jeans), it gets crazy lint on the case itself. If you have a screen shield on it it needs to be the anti-reflection kind or it'll not sit correctly with the plastic shield that's already built into the Defender. Or, you can always forgo the shield and remove theirs or not add one to yours, etc.
I also looked at the Commuter Series but it just draped around the phone and was such a poor, poor fit. So I passed on getting that one.
If you do get an Otter Box definitely look it up on Amazon. You can get them for ridiculously cheap!
I use a Kate Spade case. It isn't slim to the phone and protrudes so that the screen isn't flush with a surface if it drops face first onto the ground. When I drop the phone it doesn't go flying apart (some cases do that and it's annoying).
Also, I have another case that I sometimes use when I want a slimmer profile look or to just change things up. It's the basic white InCase that slides together at the bottom of the phone. It's perfect because when the phone is dropped there is no way that it's going to fly out of the case. It fits really snug.
Also, one bit of advice. If you get a screen protector added to your phone get the Case Friendly kind. If you don't you'll find that a lot of cases will lift your protector up off of the phone when you put it on.
And, Zagg Shields are a great screen protector. They replace your shield once it's all beaten up. You pay shipping for them to mail it to you and you return your old one.

That's the link to the Kate Spade cases. They are awesome.
I have the Otterbox Defender. I love it. All of PPs observations I agree with. I hate how bulky it is and how I can't put it into my pockets. But I drop my phone like it's my job, and it's still in one piece!
My boyfriend has a LifeProof case. It's waterproof (up to 6ft), shock proof, and some other stuff-proof. It's okay, but I didn't like it. The speakerphone function through the case was garbage. Although listening to Pandora in the shower was pretty awesome.
