I need a career!

I think I am going through an I'm almost 30 life crisis. I am almost 29 but I feel 30 right around the corner. I started college years ago but because of other circumstances I didn't finish. My major changed a few times but I finally decided on Psychology. I had a plan to go back to school after spending a summer on an island off the cape but I found a job and a husband and never ended up following through with my plan.

For the past few years I have been landscaping and have made my way up the the chain of command at the company, but I don't feel fulfilled everyday. I feel like I need to be using my brain instead of my body these days. I'm not sure if Psychology is really what is right for me. I want to go back to college and maybe even continue on to get a masters degree but my biggest challenge is deciding what it is I want to do. I keep getting the same response when I bring up my dilemma. "Do something you feel passionate about " Honestly, I have no idea. I know I need stability, benefits, and money is important. I am looking for something that will allow me to take care of my family financially. Does anyone have any suggestions on a path to take or a way to help make these decisions?

  • An online career aptitude test?

A chat with a local college career counselor?

Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't choose a career solely based on being able to take care of my family financially. I'd rather make a few sacrifices to do something I at least like.

  • Well, what kinds of things are you interested in?

Money isn't everything, but if that's how you feel then psychology isn't a good major for you.

  • The best career advice I ever got was this:

Think of the top 3 or 4 things you like to do.  Figure out which one of those things will help you to make the most money - because you are going to spend a lot of time at work so you'd better enjoy it.  Plus whatever you do for work has to pay for everything else you want to do for the rest of your life.

  • Thank you I will try both!!! I know money isn't everything and I don't want to base my decision on just money or sound like thats all I care about. I do want to enjoy what I'm doing. I guess I should explain my situation a little more. My husband is amazing and works very hard  as a carpenter and he does make decent money but he has an unknown illness that has taken over our lives and bank account. It comes and goes when it wants for how long it wants and totally knocks him off his feet. We have been to every specialist, done every test and been to every hospital and no one can figure it out. When he doesn't work he doesn't get paid and we usually spend all of our savings on making up for his lost time. I just feel like I need to step it up and be able to take care of my family financially because we have no answers for the future for him and he gets really upset and stressed when it happens. I think if I could ease that stress for him he could focus on being healthy.
  • Well I'm out going. I like interacting with others. I enjoy being creative. I'm pretty organized. I love working with children and animals. I like to write and read. I love to travel. I'm great at planning events. I like working with computers. I guess I have a lot of interests which makes it hard to focus on one thing. Also I know there are so many careers and jobs out there that I don't even know about I want to learn about whats out there. I also don't want you to think that I am just concerned with money. I do want to enjoy what I'm doing but what I need to explain is that my husband has an undiagnosed illness that has a mind of it's own and he ends up in the hospital often and for long periods of time. He is a carpenter so when he doesn't work he doesn't get paid and we end up losing all our savings making up for his lost time. I just really need to know that no matter what happens we will be ok.
