Birth Control/Pregnancy Question

Hi all!

Ok, I have a question, and it may or may not be kinda dumb, but I need some advice.  I have been taking Beyaz since last December, and recently our insurance caused the cost to skyrocket... $200/90 days. Crazy. So, I called my doctor, and they called me in a prescription for the generic of Yaz, Gianvi.  I wasn't terribly excited about it, because I've heard so many horror stories from friends that have taken Yaz.  I know Beyaz and Yaz are supposed to be the same, but I have a friend that reacts drastically different to both of those.  Anyway, while I was talking to the nurse on the phone, I was asking about taking Seasonique, and she told me that some women can skip periods, but others can't.  She said that I could try the Seasonique concept with my Yaz pills, skipping the placebo pills, and see if I could skip a period.  Once I got my prescription filled, I was already on day 2 of my last month of folate, no hormone pills from Beyaz.  I usually start my period on that day, but this month, I didn't.  I decided to go ahead and start the new pack of Gianvi the next day to see if I could skip the period entirely.  That was all basically background knowledge.  Now for the part I need advice on.

I never really started my period.  I have had off and on old blood spotting.  Usually my period starts slowly, with a few hours of this, and then slowly becomes more heavy throughout the day with pretty bad cramps.  I have had mild cramps but not anything significant.  Also, in the past few weeks, I have had sore breasts, I've been SUPER tired, like I CANNOT get enough rest, and my mood swings have been a little more abrupt than usual.  These are not normal things for me.  I mean, I'm a student and my schedule has become increasingly more busy, so that is probably part of the fatigue, and maybe stress is factoring in to the mood swings. Basically, I just want to know what you ladies think.  Is it possible that I am pregnant?  Should I take a test?  Do you think this is just my body being confused because it wanted to start, but my hormones are telling it not to?  Am I overreacting?

Thank you so much for your advice, anything is appreciated.

Re: Birth Control/Pregnancy Question

  • Hey I work as a pharmacy Tech and as i am in no way and Pharmacist, I would take a test. Even if you are not pregnant then you will know. Starting a new birth control can do a lot of weird things to your body. All of the symptoms you listed are possibly from starting the new birth control.

  • I started on Gianvi a while ago and asked a friend who knows a ton about it and she said that it is pretty normal on Gianvi to be completely exhausted during period week.  She also said that people typically lose weight on Gianvi, and that did happen to me.

Now if I could just figure out the random months of spotting between periods, and/or anytime I have sex I'd be perfect!

  • Great! Thank you both so much! I really like that part about losing weight...maaaaybe it'll work that way for me too (with some help of course).
  • I think the weight loss was due in large part to the fact that on Gianvi I just don't have an appetite...its not like nothing sounds good, I just don't get hungry, so I don't eat, which is awesome!
  • Probably effects of taking the birth control so long without the placebo pill week break. I got really sore boobs and some other hormonal symptoms when I skipped 2 periods in order to avoid having my period on my wedding day.

There's no reason for your body to "want" to start your period because the pill stops ovulation. The hormones remain constant when you skip the placebo pills so you don't bleed; the only reason you bleed on the pill is due to the drop in hormones when you get to the placebo week.

  • Those sound to me like normal symptoms from skipping your period and started the new hormones (I know whenever I skipped the placebo week I *always* ended up spotting for most of the next month). But if you are nervous, you can always take a test to be sure. They're only a couple bucks and it will give you peace of mind.

  • There's no harm in taking a test, but I would put my bet on you not being pregnant.  I was on BC for 7 years and never ever missed my period once.  Then after being back on BC for the past 2 months, I missed my period and I freaked out (I do not want to have another baby right now lol), turns out it is completely normal to miss your period on the pill, and your cycle could especially be messed up if you are starting a new kind (like you did).

When I was pregnant my boobs were not only sore, but HUGE all of a sudden (like an a cup size increase).  I also had cramps like I was getting my period, but never got it (this was related to implantation).  The tired thing your feeling could definitely be due to your schedule.  I don't think tired appears as a pregnancy symptom until 8-10 weeks, when your HCG hormones are really spiking, not so much in the beginning.  Good luck!

  • As for your period not coming on its normal day, it happens. I switched bcp brands and my period came two and a half days later than usual.

  • Thank you, ladies.  I didn't take a test, but I am deeefinitely not pregnant.  The day after I made this post, my body decided it actually wanted to have a period.  I was a little bummed out, because I was hoping to avoid a "normal" period...but also happy because I'm not pregnant. The sad part is, I'm still having a little bit of spotting, and would REALLLLLLY like it to quit. It's nothing substantial, but it's still there, which I find pretty annoying.  I won't be skipping placebo pills ever again...haha... Hopefully I'll get back to a normal schedule this next month.
