Trip Suggestions - Scotland

We are going to be back in the UK over Christmas for 16 days, and 2 nights of that we will be in Brussels with ds. DH and I want to go somewhere alone for a night or two, and we will be leaving from Newcastle. We thought about going to York (and still may, but have been lots of times) or the Lake District (also already been) but I was thinking somewhere in Scotland, not Edinburgh, that we could drive to. Any thoughts?

  • I've stayed in the Dundee area before which is lovely. Also Inverness is beautiful and a good base for touring the Highlands. Bonus is Scotland is super cheap in the winter time because it stays dark a lot of the time. I love visiting in the winter season. Warm shortbread and tea by a roaring fire in a lodge. Bliss.

  • St. Andrews is nice,  and Inverness and Aberdeen are both pretty cool.   From Inveness you can do one of the Loch Ness boat tours (they go anywhere from 1-5 hours I think).  Aberdeen has a lot of shopping and neat stuff to do in town.  Both are maybe a 60-90 minute drive from some great breweries (Aberlour is my favorite).  I also highly recommend Aviemore for a weekend.

  • You could go to the Isle of Arran via ferry boat.

  • It depends on how long you want to drive - what about the Borders and Kelso? Floors Castle is meant to be nice, and the countryside, though much gentler than the highlands, is pretty. Or stay south of the border and just go to Durham, or north Northumberland, Ford and Etal area? Or go to the coast - if we ever get willing grandparents, we'll head to Whitby/So Middleborough area.
