Telephone Interview Tips

I have a phone interview next week. Any tips? It will be a conference call, which makes me more nervous than if it was just with person.

Re: Telephone Interview Tips

  • Just the basics.

Be in a quiet room with no distractions

    No food or drink

Have a copy of your resume in front of you

Smile. They can hear it in your voice

Some people stick a stick-figure face on the wall so they have "someone" to address when answering questions

Have questions to ask and answer

Some people dress up for a phone interview so they feel more professional

  • I love phone interviews!  You don't have to dress up and can have notes in front of you!  Make notes on your resume. Review the job description and write out some answers to questions you might anticipate. Practice beforehand so you don't sound like your reading.

    Good luck!

  • Completely agree with PPs, though I do like to have a glass of water handy, just in case my mouth gets dry. I often find that I do more talking in phone interviews, and more listening in in-person interviews, and you want to make sure you have a drink handy just in case your throat is dry and you need it. You don't want to go up and into another room.

  • Stand, don't sit. Your voice sounds stronger because your diaphragm has more room to expand
