The Holidays are coming....

Just curious what everyone's plans look like for your holidays?

Do you stay home with your spouse/loved one and kids and do it that way - or with extended family/friends?

AND

Do you cook for the holidays?

Re: The Holidays are coming....

  • For us, the holidays are coming at a crazy time right now. We are set to close on our house next week, and DH is working on the house prior to our moving in. SO, we should be moving in right before Thanksgiving, and I will not be having anyone over.

We had originally tried to have holidays with his family, but one time when I cooked for about 35 people, and they made statements like "What the hell is this? We only eat stuffing out of a box/cranberry sauce out of a can" - that was the end of that. LOL

So, DH and I have started our tradition for the last two years of me cooking for us- and inviting friends to come and spend time with us if they'd like. I dont have family, so its just "us" really.

Im always the one who cooks and bakes - typically, I will do a traditional "American" spread with turkey, stuffing, blah blah - but I also put a Puerto Rican spin on it (the way I season my turkey..) also, add some PR sides and other kinds of food- I'll also make seafood (paella or a seafood sauce) and a ton of appetizers.

I will bake pies, make cakes and bake cookies. On occasion, I will have homemade ice cream to go with it.

Im looking forward to Christmas, I think I should be ready to go by then! :)

  • I have never yet hosted either Christmas or Thanksgiving dinners at my home. I was thinking to tackle Christmas this year and give it a nice Caribbean flavor. I am usually sick on or around Thanksgiving plus I have to work the black Friday so I best not try to do anything.

  • I'm not going to lie...I've only hosted 1 holiday at our house in the almost 4 years that we are married...and it was catered courtesy of Boston Market! LMFAO

Our 1st house wasn't very big and only fit about 10 people comfortably so having both mine and DH's family over on the same holiday wouldn't work...just too tight. And since we sold our house and now live in an apartment, it is just as small as our house, so we either have the major holidays at my moms, sisters or DH's sisters house (DH's mom lives in an apartment even smaller than ours, so she's out...and my bro lives in FL). Whoever is hosting it usually does majority of the cooking, but I always make a few sides to bring over.

I don't know what we are doing for Thanksgiving and X-mas this year. It will be 1 year on 12/23 since DH's dad passed away, so I don't think his sis is going to want to host any holidays, so we will probably just be with my fam for both of them. ooh, also, my sis's husbands fam is Jewish, so they don't celebrate the Catholic holidays and they really don't even celebrate Thanksgiving, so her and her fam are usually always with us. We don't talk to my dad's side of the family, so we don't see them and my mom only has a sis. As for DH's fam, his mom is 1 of 4 and his dad was never close with his fam, so we keep it simple and get together with immediate fam only...we never do friend holidays (they are usually with their fams).
