India Travel Question (PittPurple?)

Does your passport have to be valid for X amount of time before traveling to India?  The consular information sheet doesn't seem to say, as it does with other countries.

My passport expires in August (22nd to be exact) and we're probably going to India in early February.  Even if it's 6 months, which is common, do you think cutting it that close would be a problem?

Pitt- When are you going to India?  Hope you're well!

Re: India Travel Question (PittPurple?)

  • When does your visa expire?

I would check the embassy website (or call them), since they generally have more specific information.  I would guess that 6 months should be okay.  Reading all the regulations from dealing with ExH's Indian passport, I've rarely (never?) seen anyone ask for more than 6 months.

    Err, visa?

That's another thing.  Where will I be when I seek an Indian visa?  If it's Norway, no way will I have a valid visa at the time.  But being in Norway at that time is unlikely.

If it's the UK, I can't apply for a post-study work visa until December, so won't have a visa there until January.

I hope India won't hold my passport hostage until a visa is issued.

  • I dont think your visa matters, you just send your passport to the Indian embassy wherever you're living. We got our passports back in 2 weeks I think? It will matter for travelling obviously but for applying for the Indian visa, I don't think it will. And I don't remember there being a requirement for a valid passport for a specific length of time but it's worth checking. Personally, I'd renew my passport beforehand anyway just in case of anything going wrong, you'll have to do it in August anyway.

I just got back last night - it was amazing! Exhausting and overwhelming, but amazing and exhilarating too. It was just what I needed, there was no time to be too introspective! Let me know if you have any questions! Do you know where you're heading and for how long?

A week in Mumbai for a wedding.  We'll probably add a few days onto it.  Where did you go?

Delhi, Jaipur and Agra. I would LOVE to go to a wedding in India. We stayed at a homestay in Agra and the owner was showing us pictures from his daughter's wedding... so, so gorgeous!! Are you going to get an Indian outfit (I desperately want an excuse for one!)?

If we go (we'll do our damnest to make it happen) we will be put up with some serious hospitality.  So I imagine we'll get one.  I've never seen an Indian wedding where everybody wasn't 100% decked out.

I looooooove Indian weddings.  Always have.  Scottish ones, too!

  • I would apply for the visa as soon as you can. You're right that doing it in Norway would be a hassle. I haven't heard any news about it getting better.

  • Pitt did you have to use the VFS Global service to apply?

I don't even know what that is! We just found the Indian consulate or embassy (cant remember which) online and printed out the form. It was an annoying form. DH had to drop off our passorts and paperwork to the embassy in Edinburgh and pick them up later on.
