Swim Barb

Who has done lessons with her?  What are the non-infant lessons like?  I'm enrolling K in lessons, she is comfortable above water, but does not like going under, so I need her better equipped since my parents have a pool and we spend a lot of time there in the summers.

Re: Swim Barb

  • Oh, thanks for posting. I couldn't remember her name from our last conversation about this.

If anyone has thoughts on the infant classes, please share.

  • We tried a few sessions ago and it was horrible...but mainly b/c Blake was not ready to go in the water with just the instructor...we have always done mommy and me ones and he had no interest in going in the water with just the instructor....and he loves swimming and will go under and everything...just not with someone he didn't know!   She gave us a refund b/c she said at his age she said if he wasn't ready they probably wouldn't be able to convince him!  We will probably try again next summer but not sure we will try them again or maybe look at a private lesson somewhere...

I have heard good things about swim barb and wish Barb would have been there when Blake had that first lesson b/c I have a feeling she could have gotten him to get in with her.

  • Yes, thank you for posting about this.  E is not doing well in a swim class setting and I am thinking about doing private lessons for her.

cubluebride- we will more than likely do the mommy and me class with Ian in the spring class at Nathan Hale.  It's $22 for 10 weeks (1/2 hour lessons).  I did this with E, I think she has just developed a fear of the water and a little bit of it may be a new sibling thing.

I'm worried about that.  K loves to swim, but I'm afraid she won't get in with an instructor.  She won't go under, but she does like to swim, so I was hoping to get in with someone who can help her overcome the underwater fear.  I emailed Barb to see what she recommends, but might just do the Y or something less expensive until I know she's comfortable.  I am going to talk to her tonight and see what she thinks, get a sense if she'll even go in the water without me.

  • Brody has been going for a few years now and I personally love it.  He didn't have any experience with me in the water so he does fine with the instructor.  I like it because it's small classes, usually 3, sometimes 4 but that's the max.

On his first session he wouldn't get in either, and Barb was there, told me to step back and she got him in with her special brand of coaching.  Now he hops right in, can put his head under, etc etc.

I've never been anywhere else, but I can highly recommend her.

If I remember correctly, the first level of lessons doesn't even cover putting their heads under, it's just getting them used to the water and trusting the instructor.  After reading what the different levels covered, I thought it would go dreadfully slow, but I'm seeing that all of it is a necessary progression.  Barb really will work with you individually with your child in getting them in the right class and keeping them there until they're comfortable moving up.

Yeah, I think you are right that the first class basically introduces the water and I want to say it talked about working towards going under but am not positive.  I do think I would have had a different experience if Barb would have been there at the actual session we were at but she had basically popped in to say hello and then elft.  When I talked to her after she had said that she wished her isntructor would have come to get her and she would have gotten in and helped Blake out.  She also told me that starting shortly after age 3 like we did was on the early side.

And Steph, like you mentioned this was right after Kennedy was born and I think Blake was just not ready for some of this big boy stuff...I really think I may look into a private lesson when we try next...  Blake is very strong willed and isn't going to do it if he doesn't want to!

Holy moly! I have only checked one place, but the quote I received was $275 for 12 weeks.  And I'm pretty sure it was 1/2 hour lessons.  This was Swimtastic, which came highly recommended from my good friend.  I had planned to call Diventures too.  Does anyone have any experience with either of these places?  Does Swim Barb have a website? I'm guessing from some of the posts that it is not actually Barb that does the lessons, and when I first heard of her, I thought it was her - so maybe her operation is bigger than I thought?

Sorry to high-jack the post, K.

Barb does teach lessons, but she has more volume so she has a few other teachers.  A specific teacher is assigned per class so the kids have the same one throughout the whole session.  The indoor pool the lessons are at are in her house.  She has an indoor pool!   So she's always there for the most part.

  • I have nothing but great things to say about Swim Barb. Both Cohen and Cambry are in classes there. Cohen was extremely afraid of the water when we first started. He would swim, but always wanted to hang on me and never wanted to go under. After 2 sets of lessons, he is a fish. He can pretty much swim on his own. It's amazing! Let me know if you have questions on the infant/toddler classes or the regular classes. Barb does teach a lot of the classes or is at least there some of the time observing if she isn't teaching. What I like about this place is the pool is warm and the class sizes are 3-4 kids, so almost like private lessons b/c they get so much one-on-one time with the teacher. I will add the evening and weekend classes are very hard to get into and you need to enroll the second enrollment begins to get in. Kaylee most likely wouldn't be able to get in until Jan since classes for next session are full.
