Application question - WWYD?

I came across a job I'd like to apply to. They only accept applications via regular mail, and ask that you fill out an actual application that you download. That's fine, but I'm wondering what sort of note I should add to the top?

There is hardly any description for the job at all - we're talking a sentence or two. The reason I'm interested (you know, besides the fact that I was laid off and am looking for work) is that the title sounds up my alley, and the organization is great.

I don't think I could do a normal cover letter because I can't exactly match the (lack of) description to my skills. Do I just say something like "Enclosed, please find my application for X position. I am extremely interested in working for XYZ organization, blah blah"?

Re: Application question - WWYD?

  • I would still do a cover letter to the best of your ability with the information that you have. Follow this format:

First paragraph = introduce yourself, how you found this job posting, and why you're initially interested
Second paragraph = What you like about the company (to show that you've done research and have some background) and why you'd like to work there, and how some examples of your experiences would fit in with this organization
Third paragraph = Thank them, and state when you will follow up ("Thank you for your time. I will follow up on the status of my application within ten business days?? Don?t wait for them to contact you ? tell them you?re serious enough about the position to follow up with them.)

FYI, I work in career counseling at a university and this is what I'd tell my students. Hope this helps!

  • I would actually include a cover letter and your resume, along with the application.

Frustrating re. the lack of description, but you could focus on the lineup between your skills/background to the mission statement of the company- hopefully they have a website or something where you could find that, or more info on them if not the position.

    Good luck!
