Building a vanity

So I haven't had a vanity since M and I got married and I moved into our house.  I love the layout, but there's not a lot of space in the bedroom for a regular vanity, so M and I decided to "create" one. We're in that process now.

I had two Billy bookcases (the short ones) from Ikea, and yesterday we got a shelf to attach in between them (they'll serve as the "legs" - the shelf will be the "table") at Home Depot. We also got some metal rods to attach to the Billys so that they stay solid/don't move around. I also got some "Hollywood light strips" (not sure that's their official names, but they're the kind you see next to makeup mirrors in the movies, with the bulbs all out and exposed, in a strip) and M rewired them last night so that we can just plug them into the wall (otherwise they'd need to be attached to the circuit/wiring in the wall, and that's a pain). I also found (today, at Bed, Bath and Beyond) the perfect mirror to place between the light strips, so we're all ready to go.

M didn't want to start drilling till we had all the components ready - he hates making holes in the wall as it is, even more when they're unnecessary.

I'll take photos of the process as we get close to done, and might actually create a YT video of what we have created once it's all done. I know there are a few out there like this (I got some ideas from them), but I think mine is going to be unique. We'll see.

I want to stick some "peel and stick" floor tiles on the shelf/"table" area (it's just clear wood right now), and I don't need a lot - just 19"x36". I can't find a place that will sell me that small amount - everyone will only sell 20 feet or more. I know what I want (it's a laminate that's checkerboard black/white). Can any of you recommend a place (even online!) that will sell small quantities of laminate peel and stick floor tile? Thanks!

Re: Building a vanity

  • That sounds awesome. Good luck and post pics when you're done, please. I keep thinking a vanity would look nice in my dressing room, but really, I do that stuff in the bathroom and I don't have room anyway. My only thought on the small amount of tile is a Habitat restore maybe? That might be a long shot.
