Pre decision trip- what would you do?
DH and I will be taking a pre-decision trip to Geneva in November for 3 days to get a general feel for the city before accepting the position. We will have a guide on Thursday to show us around the city and a few places in our rental allowance but will be on our own Wednesday and Friday. Any recommendations for what we should do? We have talked about going mock grocery shopping to get an idea for product availability and prices and also going to parks. Our DD won't be coming with us but we do want to keep family friendly activities in mind. Thanks for any input!
Re: Pre decision trip- what would you do?
I would make sure they take you by the office so you can get a feel for its location compared to the rest of the city to give you an idea of where you'd like to live.
Since you'll be there in November the seasonal fondue restaurants will be open. I'd highly recommend having dinner at the restaurant on bains de paquis (the island with the light house in the middle of the lake). They make their fondue with champagne and it's amazing. It's packed all of the time though so you'll need to make a booking. The number is on the website: http://www.buvettedesbains.ch/pages/fondue.html
You might want to do a touristy thing or two. I'm not sure if it's like this for everyone but for me once you move somewhere life gets in the way and I rarely go do tourist things in the city in which I live unless we have guests in town.
Also, YGPM in about two minutes. ETA: Nevermind, for some reason my pm function isn't working.
I recommend checking out the Botanical Gardens, taking a walk near the lake and like Publius said have fondue at bains de paquis.
I think going to one of the big grocery stores (Migros or COOP) to get a feel of the prices. Take a list of what you normally buy and find out how much they cost here and also find out if what you're looking for is available.
