Taxes and keeping track of donations
We've never claimed donations as tax deductions before because without owning a home (not itemizing) it was never more than the standard deduction of $5,000 or so.
Now that we do own a home I'm assuming it makes sense to keep receipts of those donations. Am I right? Is it really a benefit, or is there something that makes this only apply to huge donations?
How do you guys do this? I suppose I should keep or folder or something, huh?
My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.
Re: Taxes and keeping track of donations
I start a file at the beginning of every year and label it "2011 tax deductions." We put our work expense receipts and donation receipts in there.
Did you know your union dues are also tax deductible? If you donate to public radio, I believe that is too. When you drop stuff off at Goodwill, ask for a dated receipt (they have them all ready). Our membership to the Cal Academy of Sciences was tax deductible too.
So yeah, definitely keep track, even if it seems like small amounts. It does add up!
We are in the same boat. Since we only had 1 month in the house last year it didn't make much sense to itemize. But now with the house, union dues (which I just learned) and hopefully the baby, this will be a big year for write-offs.
Yes, I have a file of "currrent tax stuff" and then another folder of "previous" tax stuff.
Every time I make a donation to Hope Services, they leave a blank form for me to itemize the donations. Since we got rid of alot of stuff due to moving int a house, I hope I can write it off.
Also, medical expenses but I believe it has to be at a certain percentage of your take home pay??? I can never remember that.
Yes I think you're right. I've never had enough medical expenses for a write-off but my parents did one year. Ask your tax person (or there might be some info on the IRS site.)
IIRC you can deduct any medical expenses over 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. Most people don't have enough medical expenses to take this.
Dani is correct, anything over 7.5% of income for medical expenses. Not sure if I'll be able to deduct the IF either but there is hope.
