Good article about SIDS prevention and crib bumpers.

  • I liked this article (as you know) but the comments are almost even better!

"A bit off topic, but that baby in the picture is so cool looking. He's like a samurai baby!"

  • Thanks for posting! I think this was a good quote:

"The problem is that a lot of parents don't understand that the Consumer Products Safety Commission is not a proactive agency; it's a reactive agency. So, it only recalls things if there's a problem. It doesn't approve products before they go on the market. And a lot of parents have this perception that it stores sell it, it must be safe?because if it wasn't safe, why would people sell it? And that's clearly not true. I think that it's important that parents realize that these things are not safe for their babies."

  • I'm clearly not a mom, but I had no idea that bumpers would be a problem for breathing.  I guess my thought behind this is, if a baby can roll over on their own to get too close to the bumper, can't they move their heads away?  Isn't that the premise behind letting babies sleep on their backs until they can roll over on their own?  Not sure if this makes sense...and I definitely learned something from the article - naive alert!  Thanks for sharing.

  • Babies like to snuggle. If a baby was snuggled up with the bumPer it would be rebreathing their own breathe the baby has no idea that's a danger.

Also if they roll into it they're not always dexterous enough to roll out of it. Just last week my girl got in an awkward position and couldn't roll out of it and I had to go help her - and she's been rolling both ways since 4-5 months.

They can get trapped and end up re-breathing their own bad air or their nose/mouth can be smooshed causing suffocation.

  • Good to know.  I definitely wouldn't have thought of it that way.

  • Does this include breathable bumpers, or just those fluffy, padded bumpers?

The article discusses not using breathable bumpers. I do use them personally, though.

  • A few of the nurses said even the breathable one's Amer... We installed our bumper pads MONTHS ago, and once Andrew starts actually using his crib, we plan on taking them out.

One of the nurses even said in 6 months, all bedding is no longer going to come with bumper pads at all.
