Speaking of DH's - I told him about my wanting to volunteer at the homeless shelter last night and he said, "Leslie, I am not comfortable with that." He says that he doesn't feel okay with me going to the homeless shelter alone because I could get hurt or robbed. This made me very angry as I feel like it is a generalization made about the homeless that really pisses me off. I couldn't believe these words were coming out of the mouth of the man I married. I dropped it though and figure I will take it up again with him later.
He needs to read our book club book!!!
Or tell him he is more than welcome to join you!

Mark has done this in the past and really enjoyed it. I really want to go, but after reading the book I don't want to be "one of THOSE" people...since I probably can't do it every single week.
My DH and FIL did the same thing when it came to riding the train. I would say bring it back up or ask him to come with you one time.

See that's the thing - I have time Tuesday and Thursday afternoons/evenings, so I could make a weekly committment at least one of those days. It's agitating.

Morning traffic,
Was there a memo or something I missed? Why was EVERYONE going well below the speed limit this morning? I only take 2 freeways and when they aren't in the construction zone you are allowed to go the posted speed limit. I was on 114 going through Southlake this morning (speed limit 65) and I was going 48 in the LEFT LANE because for some reason everyone wanted to drive slow and I couldn't get around them. I got stuck behind a guy yesterday that was going 25 on the freeway entrance ramp in the construction zone. I'm all for slowing down and I know the speed limit is 50 but lets try actually going that speed. It's hard to merge with traffic when they are going twice the speed you are!

Congrats! I hope it's a smooth process. I have a niece and nephew that were adopted and they are the greatest! GL!
I honestly do not think you should go to this area alone after dark. It has nothing to do with the Mission or the people at the Mission. The geographical location is not safe by any means. As the holidays get closer, people will become more desperate for money and material things. I think daytime volunteering or group volunteering in this location is your best bet.
I don't think he is generalizing at all. As much as I would like to think, especially after reading that book, that homeless people are just looking for help and want to get better/healthier/happier, I think that is an exception and not a rule.

I understand that. I was talking about going from like 12p-4p or something and he freaked out. He is closed to daytime, nighttime, whatever time.
Backstory: When we were looking at houses, I took him over to the Near Southside neighborhood because a revitalization was starting and we could have bought a beautiful 40's-50's home for around $75K, spent $50K or so remodeling and had a house worth $250K+ once the neighborhood was revitalized, which it has now been and you can't get in for less than $175K. I LOVED this idea and he did too. We went on a Sunday morning to check out the neighborhood and homes for sale and it happened to be right during the time when the mission was feeding the homeless. Even though moments before he had loved the homes and was sold, the sight of hundreds of homeless people completely killed it for him, he told me the neighborhood wasn't safe and he refused to even consider buying there. So, last night when we talked about it, this is what he brought up.
We are at an impasse and for the sake of my martial harmony or whatever I will likely not do it. I am just disappointed.

I caught a bit of "What I Like About You" yesterday morning and Leslie, the real blonde one used to be on Popular. It made me miss the old days of the WB.
How neat Julie! Even though it interests both DH and I, I've never known anyone that has gone through this process so please keep us updated.

We did the Turkey Trot in Fort Worth last year. There is also the Grub Run at Texas Motor Speedway, which sounded interesting.
There are usually Turkey Trots everywhere. I plan to run the one in the big town of Paris, TX. Woo!!!
