** mon.petit.chou **

I had an appointment with my endocrinologist this morning to go over some new treatment options for the PCOS.

I was thinking about you, what's up with you?  Anything new or different?

Re: ** mon.petit.chou **

  • I haven't actually seen an endocrinologist myself - it was my gyn who diagnosed me and put me on birth control. I took the pills for 6 months and changed my diet to be lower in carbs (and lost about 35 pounds). Since I stopped the pill, I've had a 35- and 31- day cycle, which is a big improvement over the 60+ days I was having before. So I guess things are looking up, at least for now. It's hard to say if it's the BC or the diet, or maybe a combination of both that helped.

My next appt with my doc isn't until next April, so I don't really have anything else to measure it by yet. And we aren't TTC, so I have no idea if that is affected or not, but at least the shorter cycles gives me some hope for the when we get there in the future.

If you don't mind my asking, what kind of treatment options are you looking at? How are you measuring whether something is working or not? My doc was just kind of like "this is what it is and I'll see you next year!" I guess she did tell me that once I start TTC, if 6 months go by w no BFP then we will look into it more closely. So I guess that's kind of the only measurement of success we're looking for, but not actually looking for right now sine I'm not trying. So really I have no idea where I stand. makes sense? :)

  • We aren't trying right now either.

Today we went over my last set of labs and she asked if I was ok with trying metformin for the next 3 months to see what happens.  I said sure.  We went over all of the possible risks and I felt ok with everything.  I will say that I really appreciate the fact that the doctor actually pulled out the drug sheet and went through it since she knew that I wasn't totally down with the meds, and not ok with BCP.

My testosterone levels had gone down but are still higher than she wants to see, along with some other stuff (i have it written down someplace).  I've lost some weight which she thinks is still the best thing I could so I'll be keeping that up.  It was actually a little motivation which never hurts.

The plan is now for me to keep losing weight, take the metformin for 3 months, get a new set of labs done in 3 months, and then go over it all in January when I go back in.

  • Also... since i've lost some weight my cycles have become rather normal again.  My longest cycle was about 10 months.  That was another thing the doctor was happy with.
  • Let me know how the Metformin goes. That's great that your doctor is being so proactive about keeping up with your progress. I'm a little jealous :)
  • Well, honestly i've never been to a plain gyno.  My regular doctor has always done my paps and stuff.  I changed primary doctors in January and withing 10 minutes of sitting in her office she was 99% sure what was going on.  She was the one who pushed me to see an endocrinologist.  I don't think I would have thought about it otherwise.

She basically said your insurance covers this so you're doing it.

I'm starting the metformin tonight so i'll let you know.
