Re: Tell me why you love Abq!!

  • Well the you would be down here!

I LOVE ABQ because it is ABQ - warts and all.  I love that the mountains are only 15 minutes from my house.  I can see the snow and never have to shovel it again.  (This doesn't apply in the Far NE Heights - you have to shovel up there.)  I like having UNM and all the events it brings in - professional research talks every day of the week, cultural activities, a pretty campus.  I love the neighborhoods - people waching in Nob Hill, the agricultural feel of the North and South Valleys, Old Town, Downtown, etc.  I like Musuem Row and all the activities there.  I love that we have a diverse economy - finacial, films, arts, manufacturing, R&D, consulting firms, etc.  I LOVE our dining scene - just about every ethnic resteraunt and not too many chains.  I love that we have a long growing season - I still have watermelons and tomatoes to harvest.

  • Well, I love it a little bit  more b/c you're considering it now!  Big Smile

Seriously, Flame took a lot of my answers, but mostly the ethnic restaurants...anything you want to eat is somewhere in the city and it's almost guaranteed to NOT be a chain.

Also the outdoorsy things to do...running, biking, hiking...it's all available whenever you want to do it.  I think this is the top of my list.  Even though it gets cold, I don't stop running outside in the winter...I'll buy a few winter pieces and keep going.  My gym membership has been expired for over a year now.

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

    Vacation
  • aahhhh.... you two are so sweet.  I'll keep you updated, I might not know for another couple of months....

The variety of restaurants would definitely be a big plus, I bet they are open on the weekends too (tends to be out problem here).

More to do would be nice too, I do like to keep busy in the evenings, particularly with social things, I enjoy my knitting group  ;) .  It sounded like your running group was really nice Duff, I would probably be looking for a new one.

  • Trepidation is a good thing.  I do think ABQ is an acquired taste.  DH hated it for years.  And then one day he woke up and LOVED it.  He loves the bike trails, the hiking trails in the bosque & Sandias open space, he likes that we can shop and eat at local places.
  • Hey, I just noticed you ran another 5k.  AND DECREASED your time.  Way to go!
  • Thanks Flame, I was really excited about that time, my speed training is finally starting to pay off.

Yeah, I REALLY love Los Alamos, we have a wonderful house on a couple of acres.  The small community feeling is nice, I like running in to people that I know, and I think that the concentration of really smart people adds to the highly active community.  To be honest living in any big city scares me, I moved from small town Alaska to Socorro to Los Alamos, so I just don't have a lot of experiences with it.

So what exactly is speed training?

I do think big city versus small town is something to consider.  In some ways, ABQ is a collection of small towns.  There are a lot of neighborhoods that are pretty educated/smart, some parts of town (North or South Valley or out in the Eats Moutnains or Edgewood) where you can have a few acres.

We definitely have places open on weekends and after 5pm.....

  • At least for me the speed training is a combination of exercises like knee ups and strides plus sprints, between 100m and 1/2mi.

I've thought Edgewood looks nice, it is good to hear that it might actually be a nice place to live.  Maybe I'll go down there and explore one of these days.

  • I lived in Abq. until I graduated from H.S.  I absolutely loved being so close to the mountains and the amount of activities that Abq. had to offer.

I still visit my parents about once a month and take advantage of the great restaurants and shopping that Abq. has to offer.

  • Definitely come down and explore.  We have a guets bedroom that ius avaiable for crashing!  If you really want a more rural feel, I think Edgewood or the East Mountains would suit you.  (I also really like Corrales and Placitas, but they are a bit pricier.)  I have a friend who lives out in Edgewood, so I can get some info from her if you like.
  • Thanks  :)  I might ask for more info in the future, but I think i have plenty to think about right no, especially since this move isn't 100% yet.
