Ruined my counters...

Last night DH and I were jarring some apples and green food coloring got knocked over.  We didn't notice until the end when we were cleaning up.  Now my black, white, and gray marbled granite counter has a HUGE green spot soaked in.  We scrubbed it, but it wouldn't come out.  Crying

I found a recipe online that combines corn starch and peroxide and needs to set over night, but that only took off some of the food coloring... we are trying it again tonight hoping it will take off the rest.

Any suggestions?  I'm just super annoyed about this...

Re: Ruined my counters...

  • oh no!!!! i don't have granite so i have no clue....but i always thought that granite was sealed so that color wouldn't stain like that?

  • Ugh that sucks. I've let Clorox cleanup spray sit for a few hours on it and it gets out anything. Make a huge puddle of it. Just don't let it dry up at all before wiping it.
  • Do you know who installed it? Or is there a local granite place you can call? Call up and ask them if they have a solution for removing the stain. Or if there is something they may be able to do with a chemical they have...GL

  • I'm not sure who installed it, or when the last time it was sealed was.  The counter-top was already here when we moved in last March. I've had spills on the counter before, but they have always been wiped up immediately so there was never any staining.  To be honest, I never really thought about if the counter was sealed or not, although now I wish I had!

Thanks for the suggestions!  I think there is a granite place in Mahopac that I will give a call.  I def need to find out if they can re-seal this for me!

Kendra- how you keep it from spreading out?  Or is the clorox thick enough that it won't spread?

  • They sell this powder stuff in the cleaning supply isle(i dont rem what it's called) but it comes in a green can you mix a little with water and let it sit it works great.Just read the back to make sure its safe for your counter type.
  • If they stained they weren't sealed properly.  Most likely they were damaged.  Sorry hun.

  • Most granite is supposed to be re-sealed annually.  I hope you're able to get it out.   Sad  If not, I think that would be a great spot to put a big fruit bowl or house plant.

  • You need to make what's called a poultice, it will absorb stains from porous materials (got rust out of my mom's marble floors):

Mix hydrogen peroxide with talc powder to a consistency a little thicker than peanut butter. Apply it over the stain and cover with saran wrap. Leave it alone for at least 24 hours, then remove the plastic wrap and let the powder dry (can take another day or so - don't peek!) Once it's dry, remove it and hopefully your stain is completely gone- if not, repeat the process.

That is similar to the mixture we made.  If everything isn't out by tonight I'll try that!
