QOTD Wednesday (desserts - or, if not pumpkin pie, then what?)

Because there are so many pumpkin pie haters here, I have to ask: What is your favorite Thanksgiving dessert? (If it's pumpkin pie, that's fine, too.)

  • Mine is pumpkin pie! It's traditional. It's tasty (IMO). It's easy to make. Win all around.

Second favorite would be pumpkin cheesecake.

  • birthday cake - my birthday is 11/23 so there's almost always some birthday cake (or cupcakes) involved in thanksgiving.

  • Probably pumpkin for the nostalgia. If MIL's birthday falls on turkey day (it often does), we have French Silk pie, which isn't traditional but is delicious.
  • Mine is pecan or Dutch apple pie.

  • I am one of the pumpkin pie haters...mom makes a kentucky derby pie every year that is yummy!!!
  • Ditto on the pumpkin cheesecake, or my new fave apple caramel cheesecake, and of course my mom's delicious apple pie.  Yum.

  • I wouldn't choose pie at a buffet of desserts....which thanksgiving kind of is!

my favorite thing now is a pumpkin gingerbread trifle i made last year.  almost as easy as pumpkin pie (i buy the gingerbread from WF premade), but far more yum.

and apple or pear crisp is also good.

if i must have pie, pumpkin is a contender as is my grandmas' (and only my grandma's) pecan pie or strawberry rhubarb (this is probably my favorite pie with a pastry crust)

  • while I don't like it, I certainly appreciate that others do so I make the pumpkin pie. I also make pecan pie cupcakes (more like a muffin than a pie-- my family loves 'em!), chocolate chip cookies (I love 'em!), and last year I made these cherry pie turnover/calzone-y looking things that were a HUGE hit so they are now added to the repertoire. We also had s'mores snacks (take the marshmallow, dip it in melted chocolate, then dip it in graham cracker crumbs - also a HUGE hit). Honestly, I was in such a coma from so much cooking last year I can't remember all we had - just that the groaning board was indeed groaning!

  • Apple crisp - hands down. I have yet to perfect an apple crisp recipe but I try every year.

  • Pumpkin pie, for sure. Pecan pie is too sweet for me, and apple pie is just sort of meh to me.
  • my favorite is apple galette and topping it with cinnamon ice cream. yum!

  • I have been making pumpkin gooey butter cake instead of pumpkin pie for the past couple of years.  So.good.  I also always make something chocolate because (IMO anyway) it's not a real dessert without chocolate :)
    ? ?????????????????????????????????????????
  • I don't know if it's a traditional Thanksgiving dessert, but my grandmother always makes lemon meringue pie at Thanksgiving that is awesome.

  • Oh, so many options . . .

I mentioned in the holiday post that I love pumpkin bars. My friend makes this amazing chocolate velvet pie for our Fake Thanksgiving every year that is just amazing. Pumpkin cheesecake, or an apple crisp (my step-mom puts cheese on hers, which sounds weird but is actually really good), and anything with cranberry. I made this cranberry/caramel tart from Smitten Kitchen one time that was delish.

    ditto!

  • My moms apple cake, it's so moist and delicious.  I look forward to it every year.  I'm not really a pie person, but I do love crisps and cobblers. My birthday is always thanksgiving week and I usually request either ice cream cake or a pumpkin spice cake with cream cheese frosting.  Cooking Light has a recipe that is divine.
  • We always have cherry pie and french silk pie in addition to pumpkin pie, and I prefer either over pumpkin but love the french silk.

  • OH!  I CHANGE MY ANSWER!!!!

Last year I also made MS's apple pie with a cheddar crust & it was off.the.hook.  The crust was kind of like a cheese straw & the apple filling was sweet-tart.  It's a pie I could get behind.

  • Pecan Pie or Cheese Cake
  • This is a difficult question! I think my absolute favorite would be pumpkin cheesecake but then I also love Pecan Pie with a handfull of chocolate chips thrown in! I just try not to think about all the corn syrup and mollases that's in it!
  • Pumpkin pie, but I'm also planning on making this for my apple loving husband for Thanksgiving this year - http://smittenkitchen.com/2009/11/gingerbread-apple-upside-down-cake/
  • I love pumplkin pie, but I also love a good apple cranberry crisp with vanilla ice cream.

  • We have pumpkin pie and also an assortment of cookies that my mom gets from a lady's relative at work. There's normally lady locks, peanut butter cookies, mini cheesecakes, and I forget what all else.
  • Of the dessert offerings we have, my faves are apple pie, or my grandma's coconut pie (my fave!).

Sometimes we also have a chocolate pie my grandma used to make, basically chocolate pudding and cool whip in a choc. cookie crust and then frozen. But that one is usually reserved for Christmas.

  • Paper bag apple pie - you literally put the pie plate in a paper grocery bag and bake it. My mom found the recipe in a magazine in the 70's and has been making it ever since. It is not Thanksgiving if I don't have that pie. If we are invited to someone else's house, I bring it. If I was ever invited somewhere and wasn't asked to bring a dish, I'd make it to have at home later.

"An apple pie without the cheese is like a kiss without the squeeze." Nevermind. Must be a Midwest thing! (My dad says this...)

  • I love pumpkin pie or pumpkin cheesecake, but I really like almost any fall dessert.  If it has apples, pumpkin, cranberries, or caramel, I'll probably love it.  Bonus points if it has chocolate.
