Going to a Christening on Saturday - gift?

Hiya!

I'm going to a good friend's son's christening on Saturday. As I'm Jewish, and more of our friends aren't religious, this is the first Christening I'm going to and I don't know what I'm supposed to do! There are about 15 people going and I'm on my own as DH is still in India. There's a service at noon at a church and then they're taking us all to lunch at a restaurant I've wanted to go to forever.

So is there a traditional Christening gift? Money? Books?

I'm assuming something like a skirt with a jumper (it's freezing here) would be appropriate, right? They are typically super informal, they walk and bike everywhere and we tend to go hiking and such with them. There's nothing wrong with wearing black, right?

TIA!

Re: Going to a Christening on Saturday - gift?

  • Hi Pitt, for Christenings I normally give a silver moneybox (James got one for his Christening and love his - he got a helicopter one) or I give a book with a bible story in or first prayers. It depends on how close to the family I am and how religious they actually are.

Skirt with jumper should be fine and there is nothing wrong with black.

Edit - I just looked at the link and should say that you do get girl ones too - like a pram and unisex ones - like an ABC cube. Also this one is quite cute - http://www.hsamuel.co.uk/webstore/d/6500714/

  • A friend had a dedication this past weekend. It was more informal than yours sounds.... that being said, a church outfit would be appropriate - skirt/dress/nice slacks. Black should be fine.

They did get a lot of books. Some of them were more like kids Bible story books, but they got some other ones that looked really cute - some Dr. Seuss ones. In fact, I think thats all they got. I can't remember any other presents.

  • The outfit you are planning sounds fine.  The silver money box or a book is a nice gift too.  Basically think anything that will be like a special kind of keepsake thing, it doesn't have to be expensive, but it is probably not the time to buy the useful baby gifts like bottles or diapers.

When we had our little one baptized before we got out here we also got a handful of savings bonds and some checks too.
