XP: Christmas Tree Lot

Ok, this is a really random question but I thought I'd throw it out there ... I'm always amazed at the knowledge of the Nesties.

There's an empty lot next door to my preschool and a man rang our doorbell this morning and told me he's going to have a Christmas Tree Lot on the property (I'm assuming he's already worked a deal with the owner of the land) and he asked me if I'd be willing to let him tap into my electricity and water ... that'd he'd be willing to pay me cash and also decorate my property.  I was in the middle of Picture Day and told him I'd take his card and call him later.  I haven't really given it too much thought yet and am not sure how I feel about someone tapping into such things.  My biggest thing is I'd obviously want payment up front because by the time the bill comes this guy will be long gone.  However, I have ZERO idea of what the electric and water would run for such a project.

Anyone have any idea on what something like that would cost???

TIA!

  • You know - he might need a permit for such a thing.........so you could get in to trouble.
  • sounds shady to me. ?however, i have no experience with that so i am not sure. ?sorry i can't be more help. ?
  • Yeah that's my initial thought too ... I'm just curious on the whole thing and wonder if this is normal.

  • I have no experience on this, but it sounds like a hassle.  If he does this often, why wouldn't he have his own generator?
  • Our school band always had a tree lot and pumpkin patch and set them up by tapping into a business's utilities. I'm not sure what kind of effect it had on the bills, but it doesn't sound too far fetched to me. Generators are much more expensive to run, aren't very dependable and are very noisy. I would probably contact the guy and get more details, but don't get forced into it if you're uncomfortable with what he's offering.
  • They have since emailed and now only want to tap into my water.  They seem like a legit company (website that says they've been doing it 30 years, etc) but what I don't understand is that the people they are renting the land from have businesses that are equally as close so I don't understand why he isn't helping them.  They are going to get a temp pole from SCE.
