Kalichick - a question for you.

Ballpark figure here. How much would it cost to start a small daycare of say 8 infants and maybe 10-15 toddlers? If you had the physical space. In terms of refurbishing, licenses, accreditation, other start-up costs.......?

Re: Kalichick - a question for you.

  • You might want to email me at kim at plumfieldschool dot com and I can give you lots of information but let me start by asking that I assume you mean a center because you can't have that many in an in home.  And for that you need 35 sq feet indoor space per child and 75 sq feet of out door per child.  I'm not toally sure on the infants but I could tell you in the morning.  Let me preface with I don't take children under 30 months so some of this is out of my league.

Depends on how much refurbishing and how much you need to add to it.  License is the cheapest part of it ... I believe a new license is $1000 and renewals are $500 (or at least that's what mine is).  You wouldn't accreditate right off the bat ... it takes a lot to get a NAECY accreditation (I don't have it).  You have insurance (both liabilty and what we call "kid liability") which runs me about $6k/yr between the two.  Plus you have all the staff, etc (babies is 1:4 and I believe toddlers are 1:6).

I would say easily $100k but like I said email me and I'll give you a better idea and tell you what I spent. :)

  • I was talking to a friend about it and she thought it would be a LOT less. I figured at least 100K. So I don't need more info - I just told her I knew of someone who would know. I will pass along the "bad" news.

    Thanks!

  • Alisa,

A lot of people think that ... "oh it's so easy, I'll just start up my own school" and then they find out what it would cost.  It all adds up and quickly ... to give you an idea the chairs kids sit in cost on average $22 a piece ... and you have to have one for every kid.  Ok so $300 let's just say plus the tables (which run a couple hundred a piece) and then it just goes from there.

I always say I wouldn't start one from scratch because of the time and cost involved.  I would only buy an existing and refurb, etc.

    Definitely $100k easily!
