What is your maternity leave policy like at work?
I'm disappointed my job doesn't have a real "maternity leave" policy, just FMLA. They are letting me take 6 weeks STD (even though I was sectioned. since they pay at 100% I don't get the other 2 weeks. I think they do this for all FMLA requests for workers with as much seniority as me. I guess it works out though since I get full pay for those 6 weeks instead at the NYS rate) and my 4 weeks of vacation. I can take 2 weeks unpaid, but probably won't. They wouldn't give anything in writing and changed the story about using my 2 weeks sick time for paid leave.
I will probably start working from home after the 6 weeks- nothing heavy, but I have to go back to the office at least once before leave is over. My bosses have already called several times since the baby came regarding HR issues. The bosses have been supportive and helpful, although a tad BSC (one boss told my coworkers that she couldn't believe I "was doing this to the office" and it's unbelievable that I'm entitled to 12 weeks away. Apparently, HR wanted me to take some unpaid leave and challenged my vacation time. The biotch from HR actually asked my boss about my child care arrangements for when I return to work and how I could come back to work without taking 2 weeks extra unpaid. Sheesh.
Re: s/o maternity leave
when i had Ava, the policy was 12 weeks, full pay. it was awesome. paternity leave got the same thing.
by the time i had Samantha, they changed the policy because they were taken advantage of - one of the new hires announced she was pg and getting 12 wks like me, and they generously gave her 6 weeks. she was only with us 6 weeks at the time. and a male colleague was pretty open that his wife basically took the baby and lived with her mom and he visited for dinner. he essentially took a 3 mos vacation on the business's dime.
so...they made paternity leave 4 weeks (still generous - my husband took vacation time for Ava and the day I gave birth off for Sam, plus the morning to bring us home), and maternity leave was made 6 weeks, with the option to take up to 12 total - using vacation/sick time and/or STD.
I lucked out with Jack. I wound up with 5 weeks paid leave, returned for 6th week, then had whole summer off paid and quit the day before school started because my boss was a b!tch and I got a new job.
That said NYC Teachers get STD through state and can do FMLA and use whatever they have saved up as there paid time. There is a catch 22 with end of year babies because if you take your leave and it backs up to summer vaca you don't get paid after STD or FMLA which is why I went back for 1 week after 5 weeks pp with csection.
With C I was laid off in May and been on unemployment and back in grad school. Best scenario ever since it is more than STD and last 99 weeks as long as I am in grad school taking enough credits.
You have some nerve, lady!!! How dare you spend time with your newborn and neglect your office!! Ugh, people make me sick. This person needs a life.. or a family.
I am sure it is very tough to deal with but just try enjoying time with your beautiful family and not worry about idiots at work.
My job does not offer maternity leave at all, however when i first started they were offering some insurance for like 20cents a paycheck that would cover maternity leave so i will get up to 12 weeks(I'm sure it isnt full pay but hey atleast it is something).
I work in social services so there is ZERO paid leave. We get the full FMLA unpaid and can take up to 6 months of extended leave beyond that. If we want to be paid, we are allowed to take all of our accrued vacation and medical time.
With G, I ended up paid for almost six months because I had been with the agency forver and had a ton of accrued time.
For this baby, I will only have about 6 weeks I can cash in but, will still be taking the full 12 weeks FMLA.

I'm on a crusade right now to implement a paid maternity policy at my company since we don't have a formal policy except for at the senior partner level (which both men & women get 12 weeks 100% paid....nice, huh?!)
For everyone not at the senior partner level it's a medical leave policy. 6 or 8 weeks paid leave and the % those weeks are paid at depends on how long you've been with the company (ranges from 60%-100%). Plus you can take additional unpaid leave up to I think 6 months. It's a very complicated system.
When I had A I got my 6 weeks FMLA + I took 2 weeks medical leave before he was born + I took my 4 weeks vacation on top of it. So I ended up getting 12 weeks, 10 of which were paid out at 100% and 2 at 75%. I went back to work when he was 10 weeks old.

Working for a municipality I also have no paid maternity leave. We have 12 weeks FMLA as well. I took 6 weeks of my vacation time I had saved (paid) and then took 6 weeks of FMLA (unpaid). I had to take my vacation time first then FMLA according to our union. I "think" I could have stayed out an additional 6 weeks for FMLA but we couldnt afford no pay check.
I hope that your job leaves you alone so you can enjoy time with that sweet baby. Try to get the best possible outcome for your family.
Which is the FMLA paperwork she did.
