Help! Hardwood vs Wood Tile
Okay, I have to tell my builder this week if I want hardwood floors or ceramic tile that looks like wood. The areas that will have this flooring will be: entry way, hallways, study, kitchen, and dining room. I like the idea of hardwood floors (we've never had them), but I'm terrified of having wood in the kitchen. I think hardwood is good for resale as well. I'm also very drawn to the wood tile, but that's a lot of sweeping and mopping! Is wood tile too trendy? Will it totally date the house a few years from now? The price is about the same. I think that's my problem. If there was a price difference I could easily make the more budget friendly decision. What would you choose?
Re: Help! Hardwood vs Wood Tile
My parents have wood in their kitchen and it looks terrible. Granted, it is 25 years old, but my mom spilled some oil on it and it left a big mark. They are getting new floors in their whole house and they are still going back with wood in the kitchen though.
I think the tile is probably more durable if you have pets/kids, but I think the wood looks a lot nicer. I don't think there wojuld really be a difference in cleaning it thoug since both would have to be swept and mopped.
I really have no opinion either way, but when we were working on building our house there was a pretty big price difference between the two (the tile being much cheaper) so I wanted to go with that.
Wood will ALWAYS be in style. Go with the hardwood. If it is indeed real hardwood, having it in the kitchen won't be an issue. If it is laminate, it will be an issue.
(We added hardwood about two years ago and looooooove it!)
EDIT: As an FYI, we are going with the wood-like type in our bathroom. It is an exact match to our hardwood and given we have carpet between the hardwood in the hall way, it won't be obvious that it is "different." DH spills water EVERYWHERE in the bathroom so I don't have a choice. I think it is beautiful but I do think it is trendy. At the same time, it is a relatively brand new product, so it won't go out of style anytime soon.
My mom's friend had hardwood in her kitchen and their dishwasher leaked while they were gone. They had to redo all of their flooring--it was AWFUL. The dishwasher was brand new. I would not put hardwood in my kitchen for that reason...plus we're very messy with the water from the fridge, sink, dishwasher, etc.
We have the tile that looks like hardwood in our living and study. I really love it. It looks like old barn wood. I got it because I have a 100lb. dog and a 3 year old. There was no way in hell hardwood would hold up against those two--sometimes I get scared he'll fvck up my tile somehow he's so rambunctious. So, if you have huge dogs or crazy kids, I'd stay away from the hardwood until your dog is gone and your kid is old enough to know better.
