Sad/happy story, foster care related

Sorry for being a post whore-I should be working on a lecture but I am just not feeling it today.  Procrastinating instead.

Went to a halloween party last night and saw an acquaintance I hadn't seen since June.  He had a 2 month old baby with him (and his wife).  Turns out they became foster parents and wanted to drop by and introduce baby/say hi.

Baby was a crack baby, which unfortunately, is not all that rare in the area where they live (MrsJaay-they live in the town that had all the tornado damage a few months ago-about 30 mins from me).  Baby was kept in the hospital for 3 weeks after birth, and they got the call at 2 weeks.  So for a week, they visited baby in hospital until they got to bring baby home.

So, the bio mom does not know who the dad is.  Apparently she is married and the dad mightbe her husband, but if it is, then the baby will be eligible for adoption.  Obviously she is an addict and cannot get custody, but apparently she doesn't want the child and neither does the husband or their extended families.

There are two other possible fathers, so once the test results are in, the father and fathers extended family would likely be offered a chance at custody, so who knows how it will work out.

Anyway, the name on the birth certificate is so sad.  The nurses caring for baby for those few weeks didn't even know what the name was, so they nicknamed her something else and it stuck-that's what my acquaintance calls baby.

The name on the birth certificate is Meuah.  Apparently, according to the bio mom's husband (when he came in for his paternity test) she was trying to name the baby Mia. Sad

Anyway, good news is that baby is in really good hands and is doing great health-wise.
