Have you ever dyed your own hair?

I haven't, but I'm kind of thinking about it since I have to wait a little bit before I can get it cut professionally (thank you, $650 car repair bill).  I am a total hair-dye idiot - I have no idea what kind to get or what I'm doing. Do any of you do this regularly, and do you have any recommendations on brands?

I am so hair-needy these days. ;)

Re: Have you ever dyed your own hair?

  • I haven't done it in a long time. When I was around 13 until I had my own money to go to a professional salon my mom dyed my hair at home. Looking back on photos I looked horrible! Now granted that was almost 15 years ago and hair dye has seemed to come a long way but I don't trust myself to do it. I would suggest going to a beauty school to get your hair done if you are looking to save money. I have started going to The Anthony David school in Moore and only paid $26 for highlights and lowlights. It takes a little longer but I think it was worth it since at the salon I used to go to a highlight and haircut was $90.

  • I do mine at home just to cover my gray hairs. I got tired of getting it colored and having it not be what I wanted. I use John Freida Precision Hair Color. It's a foam. Super easy to apply. The last time I saw my mom she couldn't even tell I had dyed it minus the gray hair.
  • I used to dye my hair at home regularly. I used Natural Instincts. I've heard good things about Feria, as well. It's pretty easy, and mine always turned out well. I try to stay away from box color, though, because even if you're going a shade or two darker, it damages your hair. My advice is, if your hair is really healthy now, and if you're going darker instead of lighter, you'll be fine doing it "just this once." It's not something I'd recommend if your hair is already dry or damaged, or if you're considering doing it often.

  • I get mine done professionally about once a year to cover the grays. All the other times, I just do it myself (I can't afford to have my hair girl do it that often). Since the foams have become available, I've been using them and I LOVE them so much more than the regular liquid stuff. To me, it's so much easier to cover all of my hair (I've got A LOT of it). Also, I've always done my natural shade or a shade or two darker...never lighter.

  • I have many times. I like the clairol and Loreal brands. I personally would go darker at home, but probably not lighter (and not a drastic change at home period, since mistakes in coverage would be much easier to see). Maybe have a friend help you the first time? My sisters and I often do each others.
  • Check out the Anthony David school - you can get your hair colored for around $30.

  • Thanks for all of the advice!! I knew you all would be helpful for this. :)
