What are you reading?

I have to go and buy some new books. I read the first three books of True Blood (Sookie Stackhouse) and I think I need a break.

Re: What are you reading?

  • I'm reading "I don't know how she does it".  I like it so far.

I already hate the I can tell the movie differs from the book.  Without spoiling, the movie seems to take place in NY and SJParker goes to London.  The book is opposite.

I have a hard time appreciating movies after books because of that sort of stuff. Shopaholic & PS I love you did my head in for that exact reason (the movies).

I know, I get so angry!  I like the Janet Evonovich books, and I saw the cast for the movie and am not happy with any of the castings.  Ugh.

  • Oh and to answer the op: I just finished One day (another book turned movie which would enrage me: Anne Hathaway, are you kidding me?!) and am now reading We need to talk about Kevin.

I'd love to hear about that when you're done.  I've heard they did a good job with the movie, but it sounds like it would be a pretty heavy book.

I've taken a bit of a break from my kindle as I haven't been too inspired by anything recently.  Hopefully there will be some ideas in this thread!  Instead, I've just been catching up on some of the magazines (New Yorker and Vanity Fair) that have been piling up at home.

  • David Copperfield by Charles Dickens - a version "adapted to young readers".

I'm only reading it once, so I hope it doesn't differ too much from the real deal.  It's such a small, quick read that I fear it is way different.

ETA: I'm reading this version because it's what I found on the ILs bookshelf.  I feel it's one of those "must read" classics.

  • The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. And loving it! it took me quite awhile to figure out what was going on, it's a bit confusing at first (or maybe it was just me)...

I recently finished and loved these books:

Room, Gentleman & Players (LOVED!) and The Road

  • I'm also interested to see what people are reading. I have a lot of books on my kindle, but I can't get into any of them. I'm trying to get the Discovery of Witches, but I'm not loving it. I guess I'm enjoying it enough to want to get through it, but I just want it to be done. I feel like I've been reading it forever and it's just nms, I guess. Maybe I should just give up.
  • I"m going to start The Paris Wife soon for my IRL book club.  Also, someone is lending me The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.

  • Will do sushisamba & jldittber!

I can already tell you that I couldn't get into it at all when I first bought it (over a year ago) and now I've just restarted it pages are turning pretty fast, though I'm only 50 pages in.

  • I need to go get the third Hunger Games book, Mockingjay, then I think I'll start the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy.

What I really should be doing is reading books about newborns, breastfeeding and childbirth (looks down at ticker and groans).  Those just don't seem to draw me in the same way...

  • Just finished this not too long ago:

    http://www.amazon.com/Cutting-Stone-novel-Abraham-Verghese/dp/0375414495

Seriously 1 of my top 5 all time reads.  It's got a bit of everything I look for in a book: world travel, family drama, medical stuff, politics.  Loved it!

  • I'm reading some Poe because it's Halloweeny, Paradise Lost because I'm a masochist and a history of the Napoleonic wars because I used to be a historian.

  • Hunger Games. I'm 2/3 into the book, and it's been a huge disappointment so far.
  • Cathedral of the Sea (in English though... wish my Spanish was good enough to be more than a Corona label).

Reading it b/c, I think (it's hard for me to pick favorites, so I say think), Santa Maria del Mar in Barcelona is my favorite church.

Also listening to The Importance of Being Ernest on books on tape (ipod).  I like the show and I admire Wilde's wit (just went to Pere LaChaise (sp?) for the first time in late Sept, so maybe that's what got me on the Wilde kick.  Beautiful.  I always kinda judged... figured it was for drunk teenage boys to worship Jim Morrison, but was pleasantly surprised-- really peaceful/tranquil).

  • The Hare with the Amber Eyes. I really like it, but it's not a train book. Apparently I can only handle light, fluffy reading while on the train. non-fiction is best left to bathtubs and bedtime reading.
