moms of Potty Trained kiddos

What is the difference between a training pant and a diaper? Our OT suggested maybe bringing some training pants to therapy and having them to help him learn some self care skills and to try to potty train soon. He is interested in the bathroom and flushing the toilet...so we may try it, even though I am worried that the communication breakdown is too much to deal with along with potty learning...but im just unsure of the whole process....Ack.

  • Training pants like Pull-ups?  They're diapers but they don't velcro, they're all one piece like real underwear.  So the kids can get the hang of putting them on and pulling them down to go.  But if they have an accident, you can lie them down and the pullup's sides rip apart easily so you can take them off like a diaper and save the mess.

When Hayden became interested, I told him that's where you put the pee and the poop, and he got the hang of it pretty fast because he hated being dirty.  Don't stress about it though, they say a lot of boys don't pick it up until after they're 3.

Thats what I thought, just a pull on diaper....I am going back and forth with the whole PT or not to PT thing right now. I think DH wanted to wait until December when he will be on vacation and then we can work on it together with Monk. I dont know.... Im not going to stress...we can start doing self care without having to break out the pull ups and start potty training too....

  • Why are they in such a rush to PT? I think that would be a bit difficult for you to do right now with a newborn at home

    Ditto.

Davis is in no way ready to actually be potty trained yet.  While he has been obsessed with flushing the toilet since the age of 9 months, that doesn't mean he is ready to pee on the potty.  I'm waiting until after the holidays to attempt it and if he doesn't show interest I'm not pushing it and I will wait until he is 3.  I've talked to enough moms of boys that have told me that their boys didn't train until 3 or after 3 while their girls trained much earlier.

  • So glad you brought this up. I've been meaning to post about pull-ups vs underwear.

I have 3 brothers and my Mom said all of them weren't ready to PT until 3, but I was PT at 18 mo. (maybe Audrey will be PT before Jake, lol).

Nothing but a little velcro. Just another way to sucker us mom's out of money!! I saw these cute super padded undies at Sears the other day. "Real life" training pants. I might try those w/ Abby when she is ready. I just wrote in Jen's post above, I just used pull-ups at night for less then 2 months for a "just in case"

Kel ~ I'm going to have to check out sears!!  :-)   I think I'll order a box of pull ups and see how that goes and transition to the "real" ones.
