Need menu help for child's birthday party

I'm having trouble coming up with the menu for our daughter's 2nd birthday.  I never know if it's better to cater to the kids or adults in terms of the menu.  Here's the background:  There will be almost 20 people (3 will be kids) at the party and it's very casual - family and a few close friends.  Her birthday party has a Minnie Mouse theme and we were originally trying to do everything "mini".  However, I'm thinking it's getting too hard.

We're having Mac and Cheese Bites and a salad with both options.  Option 1 main dish is getting chicken nuggets/popcorn chicken from Chick-Fil-A (along with dipping sauces).  Option 2 main dish is a BBQ chicken slider and Ham and Cheese slider (obviously sandwiches).  The kids would obviously prefer option 1 and the adults, option 2.

Any suggestions of which option to go with?  Any other suggestions?  Do I need to add more food?  Should I do appetizers (was thinking of doing mini crab cakes, but I don't know if they'll "fit" with the rest of the menu).

Re: Need menu help for child's birthday party

  • If the ratio is 17 adults to 3 children, it seems obvious to me (disclaimer: not a mom, know nothing about children) to feed the adults and have a couple things on the side for the children.

Additionally, I don't know anyone alive who will turn down CFA.  Good food is ageless.  Mac & cheese and a salad sound good.

I don't think you need something as substantial as crab cakes for an app.  I don't know that you need apps at all...  I'm interested to hear what the other girls say.

The numbers def suggest that you cater to adults.  With that said, I know a lot of CFA fans too.  :)

I wouldn't do crab cakes AND nuggets.  How about chips and dip?

  • Go for the adults.  You could leave some chicken without BBQ sauce and mac and cheese will be fine for a main as well.  I think you should add some sort of side or veggie tray.

As for apps, it depends on the length of the party.  For a couple of hours I wouldn't bother.  Any longer and I might do something simple- cheese, nuts, etc.

  • Love the mac & cheese and chicken idea. Maybe have out a veggie tray and some cheese and crackers to snack on and fill the app requirement. A fruit plate would be a nice touch as well.
  • I dont think you need apps if you serve food within the first half hour.  One thing I remember is being at a party (kids bday party) where they didnt serve us food for like 3 hours and we were all like ~ what the heck... this party should be over by now and we've done nothing! lol

You could mix your main dish options:  CFA chicken/sauces and make the Ham & Cheese Sliders.  I like pp suggestions for veggie tray.

Crab cakes definitely dont fit the menu.
