Poll: Handwriting

 Can you read/write in cursive?

Do you normally write in cursive (other than your signature)?

How do you feel about it not being taught in schools anymore?

Re: Poll: Handwriting

  • Can you read/write in cursive? Yes

Do you normally write in cursive (other than your signature)? No, I normally print.

How do you feel about it not being taught in schools anymore? It saddens me. Receiving a hand-written letter or card is so much more intimate than anything typed. A college-educated co-worker revealed that he was never taught cursive and it surprised me. We're starting to see the first generation of adults who cannot, IMHO, fully read and I feel sorry for upcoming generations. Any future children of mine will be taught cursive at home.
  • Can you read/write in cursive? yeah, but sometimes it takes me awhile to remember how to write certain letters....learning to sign my name when i got married was super fun for a few months. it was like a 27 year old wrote my first name....and a 7 year old wrote my last.

Do you normally write in cursive (other than your signature)? no, BUT when i'm writing a lot...my handwriting is sort of like a print/cursive mix.

How do you feel about it not being taught in schools anymore? i think it's a little crazy, BUT i also get it. several of my good friends are teachers, and they're expected to teach so many things, and their kids HAVE to pass standardized tests...so something's gotta give. it's the same with music and gym classes. i don't like it at all, but i think it's partly a symptom of our very broken educational system based on no child left behind.

Yes I can. I adore my Mom, Dad, and grandparents handwriting.

Do you normally write in cursive (other than your signature)?

I write in a hybrid of both, unless it's a work note. Learning to write for hand drafting changed my handwriting style.

That makes me sad. I love receiving hand written notes. It's becoming almost a lost art to write well. I write a lot of things by hand. When I need to retain something I always take notes.

Can you read/write in cursive? For shizzle.

Do you normally write in cursive (other than your signature)? I actually write my shopping list in cursive to keep up practicing it! I know its silly, but I can't use it at work, because I'm usuing scribbling notes down VERY fast. But anything I know I'm handing off to someone else is in a cursive/print hybrid. Its just the way I normally write. MrBAMF is jealousE of my signature. Its very big, scrawly and pretty while his name looks like a blob.

How do you feel about it not being taught in schools anymore? I agree with Hayley. Its a bummer that its no longer taught, but I can understand why. Having pretty handwriting in a digital age does not score as high on a priority list as it once did.

ITA. And you're completely right. I loathe the fact that there is less extra-curriculars in schools now. Angry

  • Can you read/write in cursive? Yes

Do you normally write in cursive (other than your signature)? Only sometimes

How do you feel about it not being taught in schools anymore? I have mixed feelings. I spent 2 years learning to write in cursive, and I think in today's classroom the time could be better spent learning other things.

  • Yes

I write in a cursive/print hybrid that is mostly cursive most of the time. When I write things for others to see its in cursive.

I remember being soooo excited to finally learn how to write in cursive. I'm not disappointed about it.  I agree that time could be better spent learning other things. Its sad that it will be a lost art.  In 20 years I will be saying, "In my day we sent handwritten thank you notes."

def. a mix of print/cursive.  Speaking of signatures though, my last name went from Jolley to Foley and I don't think I have ever, once, written my maiden name on accident since I changed it to my married name.  And I think that is weird.

I didn't know it wasn't being taught anymore.  My daughter is in 3rd grade and the practice cursive.  She also has Spanish every day, art 2x a week and PE 3x a week. (public school in Augusta, Ga)
