spider veins/varicose veins

Hi there, I lurk and post when I feel like I can add anything - would appreciate help!

I noticed lately that I have some spider veins on the insides of my knees. I work out five times a week and thought this might have something to do with it (running, weights, etc. putting pressure and making capillaries burst or something) but I read up and it looks like I'm just screwed because they're hereditary. I am SUPER pissed because I already have to deal with stretch marks from getting pudgy in college and I want to enjoy how my body looks since I work so hard on it.  I KNOW it's superficial, love how you feel, etc. but it's very frustrating.  I'm only 26! Spider veins, seriously?! Ugh.

So any treatments you've heard of/tried? Cost? Anything I can eat, or drink, or do to make them go away?

TIA - you guys know everything!

-A

  • I don't have any thoughts on successful treatments, but wanted to let you know I'm in the same boat! I've had spider veins since high school - I hate them. I told my husband I will be looking into getting them removed in the not so distant future. I will be looking at sclerotherapy to get them removed.

  • I had sclerotherapy and loved it.  It's not permanent (because, as you know, your body will keep making more), but I didn't have to be treated again for eight years.

  • I've had a patch of spider veins on my thigh my entire life, age has nothing to do with it... if it runs in your family you're pretty much guaranteed to have them.

The only thing I know of that gets rid of them is laser surgery to basically kill the blood vessels that are close to the surface.  I have no idea what the cost is, and I honestly get more grossed out at the thought of dead veins in my legs than healthy veins that happen to be close to the skin.

  • I have some too ! On my thighs.... it runs in my family also. I don't like them, but getting used to them. I wouldn't get any laser or surgery to change it, that's the way I am and like someone else said I'll probably get more. So I might as well get used to it.

I think my mom had something like this done. I don't know what the cost was but she was happy with the results. She did have AWFUL bruises afterwards thought so make sure you get it done when you won't want to be showing off your legs for awhile. She got rid of them just before going to Florida and she was embarrassed to be out in a swim suit.

  • thanks for the replies! I looked into it and it's SUPER expensive (to me anyway) so I guess....oh well! Lots of tanning lotion! :)
