XP: Have any of you ordered from Fabric.com before?

I have never bought fabric online, I typically like to see how it feels in my hands before I buy it - but I am completely unsatisfied with all of the offerings at the fabric shops around here.

I want to make my own nursery bedding, because I'm really picky.

Were you happy with it if you did?  Any other recommendations for online shopping for fabric?

  • Yes Ive brought a few times from fabric.com.... and I have been happy with what I have got. Once they got one piece wrong (in a relatively big order.. for me!) but they sent the correct fabric straight away and I got to keep the wrong piece sent (unfortunately it wasn't really my taste in fabric!) .... but overall I have been happy. You can also get samples of some of the fabrics for not too much $$ which is nice.

There are lots of other recommendations in the FAQ at the top too... but I haven't ordered from anywhere else!

  • I have ordered from Fabric.com and Hawthorne Threads and they are both great.  I haven't had any issues with an order yet with either of them, so I haven't had to deal with their customer service.  I really like Hawthorne Threads' viewing/searching with color selections.

I agree about wanting to see the fabric in person before I purchase, especially if the color is shown wrong on my computer screen.  I need to look more into ordering samples first.

  • I know fabric.com is a favorite around here, so I'd say it's pretty safe.

Another favorite of mine is Connecting Threads. For as inexpensive as their solids are, they are a GREAT quality! I won't buy solids anywhere else. What theme are you going with for the baby bedding?

Oh thanks, I don't normally post here so I didn't know this existed!

  • I've ordered from both fabric.com and Hawthorne Threads.  I also order a bunch from Etsy- Sew Deerly Loved is one seller that I buy from frequently.

I have had perfect orders on Etsy and fabric.com.

I recently realized Hawthorne Threads had shorted me a yard of a large order I ordered from them 2+ months ago and they sent me the yard of replacement fabric no questions asked, shipped it that day and I had it 2 days later, so their customer service is top notch!

Well our nursery is grey and white, with touches of yellow.  We aren't finding out if we're having a boy or girl so trying to keep it gender neutral, and grey and yellow were our wedding colors so they're a fave of both mine and my H's.

I really hate most baby bedding sets, I hate quilts, I hate anything frou frou...I really like simple, clean lines, more of a modern feel - I don't like anything too baby-ish.  LOL.  I'm impossible.  So it'll just be easier for me to make my own bedding and curtains, that way I'm in control.  I know I'll never find what I'm looking for in a store.

  • Also, I find that if I am familiar with the designer, the need to touch is less for me.  Michael Miller, Riley Blake, Moda, etc. I know what those fabrics feel like and that their products will be quality, so I usually buy online because my LQS is always sold out and the chain stores around me don't carry higher end fabric.

I am doing our guest bedroom (hopefully will get pregnant soon and it will become a baby's room) in gray, yellow, and white.  Let me know if you want to see any of the fabrics I've been collecting.  One that I really want is out of stock everywhere, but I found some other really cute and gender neutral ones.

    This is also true.

As far as not finding out and wanting to be in control. I totally understand both! I just could not find ANYTHING gender neutral enough for me in pre-made stuff, and I knew that I would be able to make better stuff. lol

Gray/yellow...check Hawthorne Threads. They tend to be more modern and they have a color matching thing, where they recommend colors that go with that one, so you could find the right color easier.

I'll see if I can find photos of the fabrics and post later this evening.  The room is still being painted so I can't show pictures of that just yet.

  • I sew clothing almost exclusively these days- so, I love Fabric.com. They always, always have good coupon codes out- I recently got 15 yards of high quality brushed cotton terrys, fleeces, micro fleece and interlock for $38 shipped. Actually, I got 16.5 yards, because they included a mis-cut for some reason of one of the fabrics I ordered (they didn't want it back). They're awesome to deal with whenever I've had a problem, too- always go out of their way to make me happy. I've ordered from them so many times- and really very rarely have had an issue. Check retailmenot for their current coupon codes- they usually have most of them there.

Thanks for the tip!  I have found a few fabrics that look promising from this site, and I'm kind of excited :)

  • I just remembered something that happened with my last order from Fabric.com.  I ordered 6 different fabrics from the same collection (several yards of each) and the main design fabric was what I wanted and was only getting the others to accent the main one when I make purses.

The main print was on backorder.  Which is alright since it will be coming.  I sort of wish they had told me that before sending me the rest of the fabrics.  I might have wanted to cancel the rest of the order since I don't want these fabrics unless I definitely get the main one.

  • I recently ordered fabric for the nursery curtains....I was pleased with the fabric. I can't really say how they drape etc, but the fabric was good quality. I don't know if I would use them for quilting fabric, but I'm rather picky about that.
