I always do follow ups/thank you letters after interviews, but what about after a resume submission? The opinion on the 9-5 board is that you should do a follow up for resumes as well, but I don't want to be a pain in the ass.
I applied for a job on the 20th and immediately got the automated "thank you for your resume" email. It said in the email that no phone calls will be accepted to check on the application status. In the job listing there is a generic "careers" email listed incase you have trouble with their online system.
Should I send a follow up email to that address? What would I say? I know they received my resume, but is it still a good idea to check in and reiterate my interest in the job? Should I just leave it alone?
Re: Follow up email after online resume submission?
I'm not sure if this is right, but I would only send a follow up email to something like that if I had a specific person's email address. I wouldn't send it to a general email address. If I had a specific email address AND there was an online job application process, I would apply online and then send my resume to the person's email address with my resume and a tailored cover letter specific to that job and mention I had applied online. Again, not sure if this is correct or not, just what I did while I was job searching.
Do you have a solid cover letter that you email with your resume? Mine was AWFUL (like... abysmal) before someone looked at it and I really feel like tweaking that made a huge difference in the amount of responses I got back.
Given the bolded, I would not.
LB- I do have one I use, but I'm sure it's a mess. It's a standard one that was developed years ago that I just keep changing the info in. I'm sure it would benefit from a revision.
I did find the name of the head of HR. I was actually looking for it to see if by some miracle we had any shared contacts on Linkedin. I just wasn't sure if that was stalkerish/overstepping my bounds.
Thanks, LB!!
Would you mind sharing with me as well? We did a good cover letter for DH yesterday, but it was for one specific job. The rest he uses a more general one that could be spiced up a bit for sure!

But FWIW, I think they should all be very job specific and tailored to the job listing.
