How do you wash your towels so they stay soft?

Hi ladies, I never cared about our towels because they were old anyway.  I would just wash them in warm water with detergent and then throw them in the dryer on high heat.  We just bought new towels and they are so soft!  I want to keep them that way!  How do you wash your towels so they stay soft?  I have a front loader washer, if that matters.  Thanks!

Re: How do you wash your towels so they stay soft?

  • I've heard using vinegar in the wash instead of fabric softener will do the trick.  I have all old towels and the only thing I can say about doing that is that it didn't seem to make old towels any softer. But maybe it will keep soft towels soft?

I noticed on the tag of one of my towels it said to wash on permanent press.  Who would have thought?  So I plan whenever I get new towels to wash them that way in hopes that they stay softer longer.

  • Vinegar instead of fabric softener.  I've been using it for everything for about a year and my clothes are so much softer and the colors don't fade.
  • Another vote for white vinegar instead as fabric softener. My towels have never been softer.

  • I am a lurker but I found that towels have to dried on higher heat to get really soft and fluffy.  I also use vinegar and that helps, but drying them on low (even with vinegar), they get stiff...

  • I find that the brand of the towel really makes a difference.  I have these towels from Kohl's - Apt. 9 Brand and no matter what I do to them, they are still soft.  I don't use fabric softener, vinegar or anything other than detergent.

Also, use dryer balls or tennis balls in teh dryer w/them to help fluff.

  • Also, too much soap can make them not as soft. They don't take that much.

  • I don't use fabric softener at all on any of our clothing...and you're definately not supposed to use it on towels.  It coats the fibers and makes them less absorbant.  So if you use fabric softener, maybe stop using it on towels and try washing your towels in hot water with some white vinegar to remove the residue.  Might take more than one wash to achieve this.

It might depend on the type/brand of towel...there might not be anything you can do to make them 'softer'.

I just wash my towels in warm or hot water with detergent and dry in the dryer.  They're soft and fluffy.  Most of our towels are Ralph Lauren towels.  I stock up when they go on sale at Neiman Marcus, Horchow etc  They have great sales twice a year, free shipping and free monogramming etc
