Re: Old School Halloween

  • I was a child in the 70s and I totally remember those costumes.  Thanks so much for the nostalgia!  I remember having plastic masks like those - so awesome.

  • Funny, I was plannning on posting the same question.  My mom always made fabulous costumes for us, but all I wanted was a plastic mask & costume from the grocery store like all my classmates.  I so did not appreciate that woman as much as I should have growing up.

  • I had to beeeeegggg for a Barbie one and finally got it. I loved it.

  • i was only a "plastic face" costume once b/c they were too expensive - i begged forever to be "plastic bride". and i clearly remembering wearing that costume waaaay past halloween until it was in shreds.....otherwise, my mom usually made homemade costumes for us (nothing fancy - she wasn't a seamstress-y person)
  • Yes. I had a witch one. I loved how they had pictures of who you were on the costume instead of making it look like a costume.

  • I remember them but I never had one. I don't think I wanted one. My mom always made mine.

Now, underroos I wanted and wanted bad. I never got though =(

  • Oh yes, I remember those and wearing them for at least one or two halloweens.

  • i LOVED my cinderella vinyl costume!!
  • Jerry Seinfeld did a great bit on those, like when the rubber string thing had to keep getting tightened and the mask would be slicing at your eyes. Those things were so uncomfortable!

This mostly but my childhood started in the 60's.

  • I had one or two. I loved that not all of them had the mouth cut out. Nothing like breathing on yourself for a couple of hours. But who really cared? You were getting free candy!

Same here.   And I'm going to be the mean mom that doesn't let C buy his costumes from the store either.  I hope to make all of his, unless it is something crazy that I couldn't make.

Same here.  I remember wanting a Smurfette costume so badly.  I thought my mom was the meanest in the world for not getting it for me. She made me a Smurfette costume that year.  Looking back, it was the cutest thing.  I wish I had a picture to share.

  • I remember the masks! I distinctly remember begging for a JEM costume one year. And being from the north it wouldn't be trick or treating without having the snowsuit on under your costume!
  • All I ever had was the plastic costumes and I loved them.  I think I was Strawberry Shortcake like 3 years in a row : )

Me too! My kids are going to hate me. But I've got a pretty adorable owl & frog this year and I love it!

Jess- that mask looks like something a serial killer would wear!!

  • I remember my fireman costume with the plastic mask. I was SO happy about it and it was the coolest thing ever in my 4yo world. And bless my mama for letting me dress in a "boy" costume! I had pretty short hair so I'm sure everyone thought I was a boy all night.

  • I was plastic-face daffy duck!  with, of course, orange plastic pants and a top with the pic of daffy duck on it.

we didn't buy a lot of costumes, my mom made a bunch for us, but they weren't ever complicated.  like, we'd wear a black leotard and tights, and she's make a felt stripey vest and we were bees.  with headbands/curled pipecleaners for antennae.

i don't think there were nearly as many actual cute costume choices (to buy) when we grew up.  i remember the firstyears the panty-hose-ish fairy wings came out.  LOVED those.

ooh, there's another one to add to my slutty halloween costumes.  i think i was definitely a slutty butterfly/fairything one year.

  • I remember seeing them but I never had one.  My mom always made our halloween costumes.  So far I've done one of each for Cooper; bought one, made one.
My big boy is bounding towards 3! Hoping to add a sibling. image Hipster dog is not impressed.
  • I had one one or twice, but can't remember who I was.  But I do remember sticking my tongue through the mouth opening for pictures.

My mom also made us fabulous homemade costumes, but I was appreciative for the most part. We'd always win costume contests (one year as statue of liberty & uncle sam, one as little red riding hood, grandma & our dog as the wolf, once as Dorothy, the scarecrow & toto (our dog), among others....) and it was really fun to have something unique.

I don't sew, but so far all of K's costumes have been unique/OOAK (pieced together from etsy & other places, etc) except for this last one which she REALLY wanted from Chasing Fireflies.

  • My mom still has all of mine in their original boxes. I remember my Casper, Wonder Woman, & Holly Hobby costumes. I think I had Isis as well.
