Mail

Do you pay attention to the outside or do you often just rip open whatever it may be?

I went to my PO box yesterday to get payments for the business and was just opening all of the envelopes and not paying attention.  I was came across a $400 money order.  Most of our customers don't pay in money orders, so it naturally caught my eye.  I looked at the envelope and realized I didn't know the name, then saw it wasn't addressed to us.

I can't lie the fleeting thought of putting $400 in my pocket sounded nice :) However, I looked up the guys name that it belonged too and called him.  I wanted to let him know that his rentor paid and I had his money.  They were very thankful and appreciated the call.  Typically I would have put it back in the mail, but since I had ripped it open and it was a payment I thought I'd call.

My good deed for the day :)

Re: Mail

  • Oh I do this all the time.. Oops!

    How nice of you!

ETA: and by do this all the time, I mean open envelopes without looking, not open envelopes that belong to other people.

  • DH gets the mail everyday and sorts through it all and gives me whatever is mine plus bills since I handle the bills. So yes, I look at the envelope before opening.

  • I usually look at the return addresses before I open anything.  If it's something out of the ordinary, I would notice it right away.  Especially handwritten stuff.  That's so nice that you called the guy.

  • Yes, I always look at the envelope before opening. At our place, we have gotten a ton of mail for previous occupants, so I don't assume anything in my mailbox is for my household. Also, the postal workers do make mistakes.

  • If I get the mail I try to sort through it before I even get in the house. Our neighbors who live behind us have the same street address plus a letter, so if I get something that should have gone to them, I try to pop it into their mailbox before I get back into the house otherwise it ends up being a week before I get around to it again!

I try to dump all of the junk mail into the recycling bin before it comes into the house.

If there is junk mail that comes in an envelope I let the kids open it. DD thinks all extraneous credit card applications are letters to her from friends.

  • That was so nice of you to call the guy, I think it could be your good deed for the month, not just the day! I do typically look at the envelopes and the return addresses before I open them. If it looks like a credit card offer, I usually tear it up before I even open it.
