Five year itch??

DH and I will be in London in five years in January and I am really feeling ready to move back. I know part of it is that we are gearing into holiday season and although we are going back, I miss the whole community feeling of it.

I also am ready to settle down, I want to own a home, have dogs and we are still working on the baby issue.  For a variety of reasons, we will not own a home or get dogs in the UK.

At the moment, we are looking at moving back in 2013, and I have to admit, successfully becoming pregnant is part of our plans, because I do want to take advantage of my maternity leave.  

I just really feel the urge to move back.  We will not be with family nearby, but everyone will be an hour's plane ride or a four to five hour drive away which is very doable (excellent links).

Anyone else get the itch to move back?  And if so, how did you address it?

I would love to move back but I am too lazy and scared to try.

I am lazy because it seems so complicated getting the paperwork done for my DH. And I am too scared to try because I hate the idea of starting from zero and having things not work out. (Jobs, health insurance, mortgage, rent, etc.)

I think if your DH is American then it is so much easier to mover back home. 2013 is not that far away especially if you are planning on having kids and still want to travel a bit.

DH is getting the itch. He's been in the US 15 years and lately he talks more and more about his next move being back to England where he's from.

We're at 3-1/2 years but already know we're moving back in six months. I will say there is a kind of itch to be back near(er) family, familiar locations, familiar situations, on and on.

What we have experienced is an 18-month itch of ready to move on to a new location. But we'll have that kind of mentality Stateside as well. Although at the 18-month mark in Italy I was definitely ready to go and couting down the days. At the 18-month mark here I'm not quite ready to leave but know I'll be fine and ready to go Stateside when the time comes.

I have only been here one year, so I'm still a newbie in comparison to some of the INs. No itch here yet, but I'm sure in a couple years we will get the itch to go somewhere, but maybe not specifically the USA

Yes, my DH is American and his company has an office in NYC.  His boss is there until October 2012 and they have already discussed DH transferring over.  It is essentially our decision, I just feel so on hold sometimes for life to get started.  I know we are loving and living life, but in terms of baby, house, dogs, etc...

We're definitely feeling the itch, but not necessarily to be home. We'll have been here over 3 years when it's time to go, and that will be a good thing. We would probably move now, if we could.

Oh wow, do you think you guys will actually make the move?  What about SD?

We've been talking seriously about moving to London.  I finally sent in my application in for my UK passport (I have tri-citizenship with US, UK & Ireland) and as soon as it arrives I'm going to start applying for jobs in London.  It doesn't seem like securing one will be easy though.

I've had the itch for a while, but we're nowhere near 5 years.  We're only 2 1/3 years in, and although I really like it here, I haven't been able to really make it home.  Right now we're slated to stay here at least through Spring 2013, but I try not to think about going home, because there's a distinct possibility we'll either stay here for another project, or transfer to a different overseas assignment.  There isn't a ton of work in the US in DH's specialty, unfortunately.

I'm just trying to stay focused on the positives of living here. Mainly my kids' schooling and not having to drive.

Right now, no! I've always said I'm good for about 6 years. It think Oz is great place to raise a family. It's expensive as hell, but I think the experience has been great. Occasionally, I get nostalgic for home but overall I'm happy we're here. And I daydream about what kind of car, house, and dog i would have if we lived back home. I think about the extra help I could have with my MIL and my mom closer by, but i don't think we are ready to go home. Of course we're only on our second year. I'm sure I'll be singing a different tune when year four rolls around. The hardest thing right now is talking to my family back home via Skype and watching their reactions when they see Cole do something new. I've come close to crying several times.

I don't feel that way at all, but we've only been abroad about four years. Is this a sudden feeling for you or has it been around a while? We are not planning on ever movin back to the US permenantly so I hope I don't suddenly start feeling like that next year.

Maybe you don't get the itch if you keep moving around within the 5 years.

Constantly itchy! It's going to get worse after I go home for my sister's wedding and see all my family (it usually does until I get back into the routine here). And with the Holidays coming up sometimes it is hard to be so far away, or to feel so far away.

I have my sights set on spring of 2013, but if I could leave at the end of summer 2012, I totally would! (DH wants one more summer here)
